Peer Mentors are integral members of the Transitions staff as they have direct and constant student contact and support. Positions can be full-time live-in with students in our residential program, or part-time. All Mentors support stud...ents with their academics and on- and off-campus programming. Peer Mentors serve as role models and program representatives to students and parents by demonstrating respect, patience, encouragement, and understanding. Positions must successfully complete all pre-screening requirements and possess a valid NYS drivers’ license for two years with a safe driving record. Must possess a HS diploma/GED and be currently in college, a recent graduate of college, or pursuing graduate studies. April is National Autism Acceptance Month an opportunity to increase public awareness of autism spectrum disorders and their impact on a person’s ability to communicate, respond to their surroundings and form relationships. Although the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that it affects boys four times more than it does girls, autism affects people of all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In fact, the CDC estimates that autism, which ha...s no specific known cause, is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States. Studies indicate that children who receive an early diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum and who receive early interventions, show significant improvement over those who do not. Lexington provides meaningful assistance to children and adults with autism through a variety of personalized supports, training, and resources. In addition to housing a library of references and resources pertaining specifically to autism, The Lexington CDPHP Autism Resource Center assists with autism diagnoses and evaluation appointments, expert consultations, a family support group, parent workshops, and referrals to other programs and services for people on the autism spectrum. For teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorders and other learning differences, Lexington’s Transitions program provides post-secondary education supports to help navigate college, careers, and independent living. This month, the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities is celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by hosting a virtual community dance project! They asked groups to share videos of people dancing alone or with others to a song that evokes inclusion or togetherness. This video features a song and footage of our own FLAME The Band and we were also able to include all the cameos by Lexington family members that we received! #NDAMM2021 #CelebratingAbilities KIM STEWART has been an invaluable addition to the Nigra Arts Center staff during the pandemic. She was willing to come back to work in a safe way to help staff prepare and serve meals for the Bright Futures Learning Center, which is co-located on the Arts Center campus. She comes to work every day with a smile and a great attitude. She has become more and more independent since she started her work here, loves to learn new things, and is alw...ays open to something challenging. She follows all of our safety procedures and protocols and makes sure she is safe when bringing food to the kids at Bright Futures. The children that she sees each day have grown to love her and get so excited when she brings their breakfast, lunch, and snacks each day. One of the things that makes Kim such a great co-worker is that she feels a part of the group she commented recently that everyone here is just like family; I like to be part of how everyone cares and wants to help each other. She is also very thoughtful and remembers holidays and special celebrations with cards and crafts that she made for the occasion. She is an excellent employee and we have enjoyed having her at the Arts Center. We have received rave reviews from the Day Care Center about her reliability, top-notch customer service, and professionalism.
