Roar! The perfect "fix" to a gingerbread house. https://bit.ly/brokenfixit

To celebrate #nationalgingerbreadhouseday, creator Jon Lovitch is adding a new (but very old) piece to the GingerBread Lane exhibit. On display beginning today, this 44-year-old gingerbread house has a storied past. Unlike the other gingerbread houses and storefronts in GingerBread Lane, Lovitch did not make this one. It graced the table of one New York couple from their first Christmas together to their last. We just kept saving it from one year to the next. It became a tradition: https://bit.ly/44yroldgingerbreadhouse Want to see it this weekend? Visit https://bit.ly/getLICMtickets to reserve your timed-entry tickets. Fall is in full swing, and the seasonal flavors in this sandwich won’t disappoint! This recipe gets its sweetness from fresh apples that contain vitamins, antioxidants and fiber, and is paired with just the right amount of spice from ground cinnamon. It’s so tasty, you’ll want to enjoy it year-round! Special thanks to our partners Kohl's Keeping Kids Healthy Program and Cohen Children's Medical Center Northwell Health for their support.

Visitor tip: Be sure to try out our new rainbow writing tablets! Upon reopening, we removed the telephones from Communication Station to ensure the safety of our visitors. Our tablets are similar to scratch boards, but without the mess. Children can practice writing their name or simply have fun drawing: both activities are great for developing fine motor skills. We are open today, so come play! Purchase your required timed-entry tickets here: https://bit.ly/getLICMtickets

Did you know it’s Reptile Awareness Day? Our collection boasts several reptiles, but today we wanted to check in with our gecko hatchlings who were born over the past few months. Sometimes locating them in their tank can be like a game of Hidden Pictures: they can be found in various nooks and crannies, and like to cling onto the glass of the tank using their setae, or small hairs on their toes and tail. Each seta is divided into hundreds of smaller hairs called spatulae, which help the geckos adhere to smooth surfaces. For such small creatures, they have a fairly long life span of 15 to 20 years. Perhaps the strangest thing about them is that they lick their eyes to clean them!

It’s finally fall, which means there are plenty of apples to pick and eat, but have you ever thought about building with them? You and your STEM Explorers can keep busy with just a few materials including apples and toothpicks. Cut up an apple or two into small pieces (you may need to help with this part) to use as building blocks while using toothpicks to build a house, tower or any other type of building. After cutting, simply push toothpicks into your apple cubes to start ...your structure. Younger STEM Explorers can build by balancing the apple pieces on top of one another. How tall can you build your apple structure? What makes your structure either stronger or weaker? Are more or less toothpicks needed for a tall structure? How about a short one? This activity will encourage your STEM Explorers to use their imagination to engineer their very own standing structure! Special thanks to our partner National Grid for their support of the STEM Explorers program.
