The first moving picture theatre opened in Buffalo in 1897 at the Vitascope Theatre. Fun fact, Edison did not invent it. He financed the machine and renamed it after the inventors fought over the credit of the projector originally called the Phantoscope demonstrated in 1895. #BuffaloNY #Vitascope #MovieTheatre #ThomasEdison #Invention #OTD #OnThisDay #JenkinsFamily #ArmatFamily #FunFact
I may or may not be drinking wine right now. You? Did you know that President Lyndon B. Johnson helped popularize American wine by refusing to serve European wine at state dinners? #Wine #WineHistory #FunFact #winelover #vino #winetime #redwine #winelovers #wineoclock #cheers #vineyard #wines #whitewine #yum #happyhour #winelife #napavalley #napa #history #winecountry #winemaking #winefacts #didyouknow #funfacts #fact #themoreyouknow #facts #fun
The Terryville Union Hall. In #November 1900 The Brooklyn Daily Eagle described Terryville as a little community of prosperous and progressive farmers. This little hamlet now in what is known as Port Jefferson Station is of course no longer farmland. Do you have family who farmed here? . . . .... . . #terryville #portjefferson #portjeffersonstation #longisland #longislandhistory #longislandhistorylessons #longislandhistoryfound #unionhall #farming #farminglife #history #historylovers #historyfacts #historynerd See more

Did you vote today? I did! Depending on when, where and who we vote for affects policies and budgets. For example, our school budgets. The photo was taken in 1971 by @cliff.debear.9 for @Newsday depicting the difficulty of maintaining lunch programs. #voting #vote #DistrictVoting #SchooBudgets #lunchprogram #makeadifference #SchoolHistory #votingHistory #DeBearPhotography #Newsday #election #elections #politics #electionday #democracy #generalelection #president #america #usa #presidentialelection #ivoted #community #getoutthevote #government #govote #win #foryouthrights #votingday #education #lunch #healthykids #kidslunch #kids #school

The 125 acre Surf Hotel in what is now Kismet, Fire Island was owned by D.S.S. Sammis, a surname quite known to Long Island's roots. In 1892, he sold it to the Hamburg-Packet Company for $201,000 at a time when weekly rates were around $20 a week. There were 13 cottages on the ground and a steamboat. Well known guests included Secretary of State John M. Palmer. In the 1870's chef Charles Williams would manage the cuisine at the hotel during the summer months. #SurfHotel #Kismet #FireIsland #LongIsland #NYHistory #Summer #SammisFamily #LongIslandRoots #LongIslandHistory #Hotel #PalmerFamily #WilliamsFamily #Chef #Proprietor #luxury #community #beach #newyork #fun #travel #vintage #wanderlust #historic #blackandwhite #cheflife
Another Victorian tradition for Halloween night: At midnight a girl would walk backwards into her bedroom while taking of her shoes and would chant: "I place my shoes in the form of a T, to dream of him who is to be, The color of his eyes, ... The color of his hair, His occupation, And the clothes he will wear..." She would then get into bed backwards and not make a sound. If she is to marry her future husband would be shown in her dream. #Tradition #SillyTradition #SillyGirls #Dreaming #Halloween #Romance #Love #Victorian #culture #love #history #passion #itsthelittlethings #sleep #dreams #dream #inspiration #wanderlust #goals #sleeping #happyhalloween #fun #creepy #marriage #happy #forever #happiness #together #romantic #life #fun #girl #motivation #inspiration #life
During the 19th century, Halloween was also referred to as nut-crack night because of this tradition: two nuts were placed on a fire representing two lovers. If the nuts burned together the couple would marry. If the nuts bounced, well.. not a good future for the couple! Are there any interesting traditions in your family? #victorian #history #historic #culture #love #holiday #traditional #tradition #spooky #happyhalloween #fall #october #fun #autumn #boo #creepy #halloween #nuts #couple #couplegoals #relationshipgoals #couples #romance #inlove #romantic #relationship #lovers #romance #forever
John K Kirkpatrick arrived to Patchogue in 1879 and became a partner to the John S Havens retail store in 1885. He became postmaster in 1891 and so divided his duties between. He also became a fireman for the Patchogue Club. These are just highlights. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a very involved citizen and well respected. #KirkpatrickFamily #Patchogue #longisland #suffolkcounty #HavensFamily #liny #newyorkbusiness #nysmallbusiness #longislandny #postoffice #community #historic #firefighters #firefighter #firemen #firedepartment #fireservice

In 1911, the New York State Capital Building caught fire which damaged and destroyed colonial records. One of the challenges genealogists and researchers face is record loss. #ny #Albany #HistoricFire #newyork #upstateny #albanyny #nys #empirestate #statecapital #capitalregion #historic #history #familyhistory #ancestry #familytree #heritage #roots #ancestors #memories #americanhistory #research #researchers #fieldresearch
