The 125 acre Surf Hotel in what is now Kismet, Fire Island was owned by D.S.S. Sammis, a surname quite known to Long Island's roots. In 1892, he sold it to the Hamburg-Packet Company for $201,000 at a time when weekly rates were around $20 a week. There were 13 cottages on the ground and a steamboat. Well known guests included Secretary of State John M. Palmer. John K Kirkpatrick arrived to Patchogue in 1879 and became a partner to the John S Havens retail store in 1885. He became postmaster in 1891 and so divided his duties between.
