This month the inimitable @tefaf is celebrating its 34th anniversary. We have been honored to participate in #TEFAFNewYork: Fall since the show was first held at @parkavearmory in 2016, and on this #TBT we couldn’t help but take a trip down memory lane - swipe to see some of our past #TEFAF booths. As we reminisce about these highlights of past seasons, we are looking forward to the future when we can participate in art fairs again and share our inventory and enthusiasm with you in person. #throwback #artfair #TEFAFNY #lilliannassau #decarts #designhistory #tiffanylamps #tiffanystudios

On #InternationalWomensDay we celebrate #AgnesNorthrop, who worked as a designer for Louis Comfort Tiffany for half a century; first hired as a young woman in 1884, Northrop went on to play a central role at #TiffanyStudios long after Tiffany himself retired and up until the company closed in the 1930s. Asked early on to assist with designing the leaded glass windows for which #Tiffany would soon earn worldwide acclaim, Northrop’s natural talent must have been evident. By 1...895 she was designing windows on her own. Agnes was one of LCT’s most trusted artists and was one of a handful granted a private studio in the Manhattan workrooms of Tiffany Studios. Known for her finely executed compositions, she designed some of the most famous Tiffany windows known today. In 1907 Northrop accompanied Tiffany, his associate and Clara Driscoll, another important designer and #TiffanyGirl, on a three-month long expedition along the coast of France. The group spent a luxurious summer touring the countryside, shopping in Paris and sketching the scenery and flora which Driscoll and Northrop would later incorporate into their designs. This rare signed preparatory study was likely completed on a trip to a seaside closer to home: along with three finely detailed drawings of a starfish, coral and scallop shell along the right edge, the majority of the page features a watercolor study of a #LadyCrab, commonly found along the eastern seaboard of the United States, accompanied by a notation in Northrop’s delicate hand. We are proud to offer this example of Northrop’s work - and continue to honor her and the many #womendesigners from the same period whose names are still coming to light. : 1: Memorial Window for Agnes’ father, ca. 1903; 2: Russell Sage Memorial Window, ca. 1905; 3: Photograph of Agnes Northrop as young woman via the digital collections of @metmuseum, framed in a ca. 1906 #Abalone Picture Frame by Tiffany Studios; 4: Agnes F. #LouisComfortTiffany harbored a longstanding fascination with the ancient world, and the influence of #AncientEgypt in particular can be seen throughout his oeuvre. #LCT made the long journey to Egypt twice, painstakingly documenting the ornamentation on archaeological sites in sketchbooks while also studying the materials and methods of production utilized by the Egyptians over centuries. Tiffany was strongly impacted by these experiences, and many of the Tiffany designs mo...st treasured today, including those incorporating scarab beetles or utilizing glass or pottery to mimic Faience, can be traced back to his experiences in Egypt. Though #Tiffany had essentially retired by 1922, when the discovery of #KingTutankhamun’s tomb sparked a new wave of #Egyptomania, his influence over the company’s ethos remained strong and his designers continued to look to the past for inspiration. This tray is part of an elaborate 17-piece bureau set designed by Leslie Nash in 1925 for Mrs. Cyrus McCormick that took direct inspiration from the treasures unearthed from the tomb of #KingTut. The set, which also included a mirror, comb, and brush (swipe for a period photo!), was decorated with hieroglyphs and symbolic motifs, accented by stylized geometric borders of inset enamel simulating semiprecious stone inlay. This shallow tray features a raised #Ankh symbol at the center, an important ancient symbol also known as the Key of Life, in addition to a flattened edge decorated with a border of bright enamel in shades of blue, teal and red, replicating the luxurious lapis lazuli, turquoise and carnelian found on the original artifacts. We’re thankful to our friends @theneustadt, who shared a beautiful watercolor sketch by Nash for the corresponding mirror in their recent Tiffany Tête-à-Tête: Tiffany and the Lure of Egypt. : #LouisCTiffanyFurnacesInc., Rare Egyptian Revival Tray, circa 1925, high x 6 long x 4 deep, signed. #forsale - please call the gallery for pricing information. #decarts #metalwork #egyptianrevival #1920s #walklikeanegyptian

Today we celebrate the birthday of #LouisComfortTiffany, born #onthisday in 1848. #LCT was an artistic genius whose extensive career spanned 50 years and spawned iconic designs and innovations in glass production that firmly cemented his position as one of the foremost figures of #AmericanDesign at the turn of the 20th century. Tiffany started out as a painter in the 1870s, shifting his focus to interior design in the 1880s before experimenting with designing in glass, estab...lishing his most prolific and well known company, #TiffanyStudios, in 1902. In 1913, on the verge of his retirement, Tiffany asked art historian and New York Times art critic Charles de Kay to collaborate on the production of his first biography. The volume was underwritten by LCT and was privately published in 1914 by Doubleday Page and Company in New York. The volume features a decorative gold embossed papîer-maché binding designed by Tiffany, and contains 21 tipped-in color plates and 42 photogravures of a selection of the lamps, vases and windows, oil paintings, and other designs which Tiffany and de Kay saw to be his most important. A limited run of 492 copies printed on Japan paper were produced (in addition to ten elaborately bound copies printed on parchment, for private distribution). This copy was personally given as a gift by Louis C. Tiffany to Robert de Forest, a prominent New York businessman and philanthropist who served as the President of @metmuseum for nearly 20 years, and his wife Emily. De Forest - the brother of early Tiffany collaborator #LockwooddeForest - was a close friend, distant relative, and long time champion of Tiffany’s work, and it is due to his patronage that the ever popular Autumn Landscape window is preserved as a centerpiece of @metamericanwing at #TheMet. The volume is inscribed on the interior: To Mr and Mrs Rob. W. de Forest-/ Dear Rob & Emily/ I send you my book/ with much love & many thanks/ Louis C.
