According to an October 2011 bulletin by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Adolescent Health, one in five high-school students reported they were bullied on school property in 2009. About 8 percent of high-school students admitted bullying others and 6.5 percent of high-school students were said to be both bullies and victims of bullying. And with more headlines appearing almost daily about the effects of bullying on kids suicide being the most gra...phic among them parents may be asking, What can we do for our kids? Enrolling children in martial arts classes is a proactive way to get kids physically and mentally engaged in their own reinvention of self. Martial arts classes also provide a fairly equalized environment for safe interaction with group dynamics in which participants are involved with a common goal in mind. Because the classes tend to be about an hour, parents often stay to watch the kids show off their moves, which can bolster confidence and encourage improved parent-child relations.
