TEACHING ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: @mz.icar Last Fall we had the honor of collaborating with the anonymous collective @mz.icar who lead a workshop on photo collage to center stories around ancestry and family legacy. The collective represents primarily Black Women and their name is racIzM, spelled backward. Their work started with the intention to celebrate Women, Global Blackness, and Play. Creating narratives in the form of mixed-media street art and fine art that explo...re histories and imagine the best case scenario future from the perspective of women and people of color. In deep appreciation for your offering as Teaching Artists! We wanted to share with the larger community some of our take aways: Guiding Questions: How do you connect origin stories, ancestry, and photos with things you want them to say or stories to share with other people? First, lean into collage work and re-focus with some of the elements in the photo to make sure our voices are specific, directed, and with purpose especially with imagines from your own archives or personal. There are a lot of negative narratives that many times stereotypes have been presented because there is no intention on what we want the focus to be of our histories and our ancestry. Second, isolate the part that is important from the photo. Third, think about what you want to say or tell the audience? What story do you want to tell? Four, gather your own materials from your archives. Thinking about growth, about seeds photo collage by @mz.icar A story of celebration, migration from Detroit to California, the story of a growing family, and a commentary of being seen. #lionstoothproject See more
