What age you should have a joint replacement depends upon when YOU need it, and here is why: Traditionally joint replacements were only offered to elderly patients as there was concern that the materials would wear out too quickly in younger patients. However, newer implant technology and advancing surgical techniques now allow us to offer joint replacements to a wider patient population that needs them. Patients who are in their 40s are now being offered joint replacement w...hen all other nonsurgical treatments have failed them, and their quality of life is decreasing. On the other side, elderly patients often consider themselves too old to undergo surgery. However, many of my elderly patients in their 80s are actually healthier than people decades younger than them and can safely undergo surgery. Anesthesia is safe and effective and modern rehabilitation protocols get patient’s back on their feet faster than ever. Do not resign yourself to living the rest of your life in pain if you do not have to. One of the most common questions patient’s ask me is if they need an MRI. An MRI is a specialized imaging tool that does not use radiation that allows doctor’s to examine the various structures in the human body. An MRI is a very effective tool for examining the soft tissues in the body in detail. However, often a simple x-ray and physical exam is all that is needed to make the diagnosis and to begin treatment. For the majority of patients, an MRI is not worth the investment, both in terms of your time as well as money out of your pocket. I can help you determine when an MRI is necessary to ensure your proper treatment. For your convenience, we offer MRI imaging right in our Setauket office!
