LVGS Seeks New Volunteers Posted on October 1, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE... CONTACT: Marsha L. Tait (315) 471-1300 X171 [email protected] Syracuse NY LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF GREATER SYRACUSE (LVGS) SEEKING NEW VOLUNTEERS Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse (LVGS) is seeking volunteers for several new opportunities. In partnership with Syracuse City School District and OCM BOCES Adult Education Programs, LVGS will train and support volunteers to tutor in SCSD and BOCES classrooms. The 6-hour training will be conducted this fall, and volunteer tutors will be placed in classrooms in various locations in the County to provide supplemental tutoring to classroom instruction. Kathryn Kathryn F. Lent, SCSD Adult & Continuing Education Coordinator, said, SCSD, BOCES and LVGS have expanded their existing partnership this year, and we are very excited about this! LVGS will place tutors in some of our classrooms with the highest need for literacy assistance. This is a relatively new concept and one that we believe will help our students to better reach their academic goals. Together we are stronger in our efforts and the community with benefit. Mari Ukleya, OCM BOCES Literacy and Adult Education Coordinator, said, I am very excited about the expanded partnership with LVGS and SCSD. Literacy volunteers will be supporting the work that is done in classrooms around the county. Together, we are able to support students in meeting their academic goals. Working together for the betterment of the community not only helps those looking for services but allows our programs to tap into additional resources not usually available to our programs. Literacy Volunteers has been training and supporting community members who want to help adults to improve their lives through literacy for more than 50 years, said Marsha L. Tait, LVGS Executive Director. We have recently created new volunteer opportunities that require less training time in order to accomodate adults whose schedules don’t allow them to complete our standard 15-hour training. We are very happy to be partnering with SCSD and OCM BOCES this will be a great experience for the volunteers and the students! LVGS is also recruiting volunteers to lead conversation groups with adult English language learners, to help adult students to learn to use computers, and to work in its traditional one-to-one tutoring model. For more information about volunteering, contact 315-471-1300 X173 or email [email protected]. About Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse LVGS’ mission is: To teach people to read, write, and speak English by: training volunteers to tutor using one-to-one or small group instruction; having a collaborative learning model that is student-centered; providing literacy services in the workplace; and serving adults aged sixteen or older who function at or below a sixth grade level. ###
