Lithuania marks June 14 as a Day of Mourning and Hope. At 3am on June 14, 1941, NKVD officers began mass arrests of Lithuanian citizens. In less than a week 18,...000 people, including families with children, were deported to Siberia in sealed animal or freight wagons. During the Soviet occupation, 800,000 Lithuanian citizens of many nationalities lost their lives, with approximately 300,000 affected by imprisonment, as well as enforced labour and exile. While in exile, one in three prisoners died from torture, starvation, or the region’s harsh climate. Today, Lithuania at noon stopped for a national minute of silence to honor a significant part of our soul that was lost during the Soviet occupation. #NeverAgain #HistoryMatters
