The following is a weekly update from the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services with the latest information on upcoming events, programs, activities and services available to seniors, families and caregivers. Dear Friends, The holidays are a time to reflect and celebrate the blessings we have in our lives. Although we cannot celebrate with our usual traditions, or gather together with our friends and extended families, we have a lot to be grateful for..., especially our frontline workers. These brave men and woman have put our health and safety above their own they astonish up with their bravery every day. This year the safest way to celebrate is with a virtual celebration. However, if you are planning to celebrate in person, make sure you are practicing social distancing and wear your mask. You should also follow these tips: Open the windows to promote cross-ventilation. Run your kitchen exhaust fan. Keep guests out of the kitchen. Wash or sanitize hands frequently. Have your guests wear a mask unless they are eating or drinking. Avoid passing platters from person to person. Designate one person with gloved hands to serve buffet style from a central location. Consider making side dishes in single-serve ramekins and using single service plates and utensils. Remind your guests to stay home if they have any COVID symptoms or a fever, are awaiting COVID test results, or are under quarantine or isolation orders. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable holiday! Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died September 18, 2020 and served on the US Supreme Court for 27 years, is best known for her contributions toward dismantling discrimination on the basis of gender, as both an attorney and a jurist. However, it was her June 1999 majority decision in Olmstead v. L.C. a landmark against disability discrimination, for which the #disability community will remember her best. https://www.littmankrooks.com//justice-ginsburg-and-the-c/
Every parent in New York State has the right to home-school their child and, given the myriad uncertainties presented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, districts are formally offering this opportunity to parents of registered students as an alternative to remote or hybrid instruction. The prospect of shielding their children from the ongoing changes expected from districts as the pandemic response continues to evolve, may seem attractive to parents. However, home-schoolin...g is not easy and requires parents to take certain steps. https://www.littmankrooks.com//home-schooling-your-child-/ #advocacy #education #specialeducation #homeschooling #homeboundinstruction

A great deal of consideration usually goes into making sure that loved ones are cared for and necessary tasks are completed when creating an #estateplan. Sometimes, certain members of the family our beloved pets might be left out inadvertently. A pet trust is a legal tool to ensure that this does not happen and that companion animals will be cared for should they outlive their owner. http://www.elderlawnewyork.com/trusts/a-guide-to-pet-trusts/ #pettrusts

Littman Krooks Special Education Speaker SeriesHowever, home schooling is not easy and requires parents to take certain steps. You do not have the right to pull your child out of school without notifying your school district. Parents must notify their school district and show that they can provide substantially equivalent instruction to what the child would be receiving in school. https://www.littmankrooks.com//home-schooling-your-child-/

A #revocabletrust can be a valuable estate planning tool. Importantly, establishing this type of trust helps avoid probate. It can also be amended or revoked, and property can be transferred in or out of the trust at any time. A revocable trust provides a greater degree of flexibility, enabling you to manage the trust according to your family’s changing life circumstances. Join us as Brian L. Miller, Esq., discusses the advantages of using of a revocable trust in your #estateplanning. Link in bio.
