Kiara, a 1 year, 9-month-old Abyssinian presented to the LIVS Integrative Medicine service for a 9-month history of persistent itching and chewing/licking at her hind legs. Kiara’s mom was frustrated by prior treatment efforts for her condition and no improvement after 9 months of treatment. Kiara started holistic treatments, including acupuncture, herbal therapies, and food therapy. Dr. Selmer also used a topical lotion to help soothe Kiara's skin issues. After about a week... of treatment, our Integrative team has seen a tremendous improvement in Kiara's condition. This #SuccessStory is a perfect example of how our Integrative Medicine service blends both conventional and alternative therapies for our patients. April is Heartworm Awareness Month! Mosquitoes are hearty pests, and protecting your pet from heartworm disease is a year-round responsibility. Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in every stateincluding Alaskathroughout the year. According to the AAHA, forecasts show heartworm cases will continue to rise. Fortunately, research has shown new recommendations that could change that prediction and help in our fight to decrease heartworm cases. Remember to ask your primary vet...erinarian about how you can protect your pet from heartworm disease during their annual wellness visit. Take a look at the @AAHA website to learn more about how to protect your pets year-round: https://bit.ly/3u3tSht #LIVS #HeartwormAwarenessMonth #AAHA

Brody, a 5-year old Lab Mix visited #LIVS initially for limping. Upon examination, we found that Brody had a cranial cruciate rupture (CCR) in his right hind leg. The cruciate ligaments are two bands of fibrous tissue located within each knee joint. These ligaments join the femur and tibia together, allowing the knee to operate as a stable, hinged joint. One ligament runs from the inside to the outside of the knee joint, while the other runs from the outside to the inside, cr...ossing over in the middle. Injury can occur due to trauma and/or degeneration of the ligaments within the knee joint. Brody received extra-capsular lateral imbrication (ECLI), also called prosthetic ligament repair, which is a very common technique to address tears like Brody's. Synthetic monofilament material is anchored behind the femur and passed through the front of the tibia in order to mimic the function of the cranial cruciate ligament. The long-term goal is to facilitate the formation of organized scar tissue around the joint that will provide long-term stability, and return to normal function. Brody visited us recently for a re-check and he is recovering well! His family reports that Brody is doing well at home, and there are no concerns at this time. Brody is beginning to gain his strength back and he appears comfortable bearing more weight on his leg. Brody will need to continue to restrict activity for a few weeks, as he continues to heal. We are thrilled with his progress and wish him a speedy, continued recovery! We will continue to share updates on Body's progress as he continues to recover.

We are incredibly grateful for our staff! In honor of their hard work and the holiday season, we organized a COVID safe holiday party.
