Eight Bells for Bob Kendrick It is with great sadness that we inform the LHYC community of the passing of Robert Kendrick on 25th November 2018. Bob was a computer programmer, passionate sailor, racer, cruiser, Waukegan YC Member (Illinois), Masthead Cove YC Member, LHYC Member, Director & Fleet Measurer, YRA President, PHRF & Distance Committee Member, IRC Measurer. So we can say he has served the sailing community better than most, and he will be missed.... Memorial donations honoring Bob may be made to Rocking the Boat (rockingtheboat.org and https://give.classy.org/Kendrick), which teaches boat building and life skills to youth in the South Bronx.

Our contractor deadline of June 25 is fast approaching! Without additional funds of $180,000, work stops, setting back the significant progress we've made and costing at least $45,000 more to restart the much needed foundation repair. We've come too far to stop here...... The time to donate and help is NOW. Many hands make light work! PLEASE share this link with friends, family, and all around you via whichever method works for you - email, facebook, instagram, snapchat or even good old fashioned phone, snailmail, or face-to-face! Customize your share with your own photos and stories on what the lighthouse means to you. If you're Tweeting, you'll have to keep it short and sweet, you know the deal. To help us reach out to all, we have teamed up with Crowdrise, the GoFundMe site for 501-3c charities (yes you'll get a receipt!). Thank you again and let's get this done so she can shine for another 100 years! https://www.crowdrise.com/huntington-li//leighsterflinger1

Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club 14.08.2020

For those who are not subscribed to our LHYC Members & Affiliates page.... The LHYC Commodore’s Cup is scheduled for Friday evening, June 24. This is a fun event with a Racing class and a Cruising class. Those of you who don’t typically race Wednesday nights or in our other open events, and sail with cruising sails (no carbon, Kevlar, or Mylar laminated high-tech sails) are invited to participate in the cruising class. I think by now you all know who you are. If you don’t h...ave a PHRF rating and want to join, please reach out to our fleet measurer, Bob Kendrick [email protected] and he will help you out. The course is simple; From Nun 2 of Lloyd Harbor, Flasher 1 off Sand City, and Bell 8 Target rock. Clockwise or counter-clockwise at the RC’s discretion. Start time 1900. See the SI for specifics. This is a fun family event, so bring the spouses, kids, and significant others, and plan to hang out at the club mooring afterward. There are no weight limits, so racers please leave your weight adjustments at home. This is our official June membership meeting, so come one, come all. Raft-up is likely to begin around 2000 for anyone wanting to join but not race. In fact, fell free to warm up the LHYC mooring before we get there! The event documents are already posted and FREE registration is open! You can find the link at LHYC.org, or directly at http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/12792#_home We look forward to seeing you there, Art Kelley Fleet Captain Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club [email protected]

The Dread returns to compete for The Case! Come join the LHYC and other LIS clubs as we memorialize our friend Jeff Hammer. His crew and family will be back in our waters this season, so come on out!

Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club 02.07.2020

Next weekend marks the Lloyd Harbor YC’s first major event of the year, the Race for the Case, where at stake is a case of rum for the overall winner! The event is also a qualifier for the Gitana, Sappho, Competitors, Kings Point, Caper & Mertz, and North Sails Huntington Bay Boat of the Year Trophies. That is a lot of reasons to join us for this event. If you need more reasons, there will be a Skipper’s meeting Friday night at 1900 hrs. at the Harbor Boating Club* in Hunt...ington to celebrate the life of recently departed Jeff Hammer, who many of you will remember as the owner of Dreadlocks, frequently found at the front of his division. I understand there will be a reggae band and of course refreshments. Skippers, crew, crew’s families, and friends of Jeff Hammer are all invited. Copies of Sailing Instructions and Scratch Sheets will be available at this event. If you need even more reasons, there will be a reception at Huntington Yacht Club+ following racing on Saturday with food and a keg of beer included. Still not convinced? How about a bottle of rum for each yacht following racing on Saturday? Still need more reasons? How about simply two days of fun, highly competitive racing? There will be a J/80 one design division, a sport boat division, a Jib and Main division, and at least two spinnaker divisions. If the mix of entrants changes significantly in the next few days, we reserve the right to rebalance the divisions to make them even more interesting. The early, discounted entry fee is available through Sunday night, and entries will be accepted through Wednesday at 1800 hrs. Event documents and registration are available here or through the LHYC.ORG web site. Event locations: *Harbor Boating Club, 323 West Shore Rd. As our 2015 Racing season continues with our halfway point in the Wednesday Sunset Series, we've been blessed with good breeze on weekday evenings. This is an August very few of us are complaining about! Now please note this: Our friends at the Huntington Light Preservation Society, you know, the folks that have brought you the Lighthouse Music Festival since 2006, need your help to run this event. First, they need some strong volunteers with great spirit to help load sound e...quipment onto boats so it can be ferried to the Light, and then installed around the light. You know, the kind of work roadies do, with the difference being that it's on the water! Second, their Teens On The Water volunteer program, which provides community service, is looking for small powerboats, RIBs, whalers or similar craft, to deliver party favors and collect donations from the attendees in Lloyd Harbor and the area around the lighthouse. Both of these needs are essential for the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society to bring us the much-acclaimed Musicfest. Will you help them? Good! Please see the comments section for more details.

Well folks, what started out stormy, then soupy and then breezy for a few hopeful minutes, and then died, later turned into an excellent Stratford Shoals Race! Our dear friend Ed Dole would have smiled at the mishaps and close calls in the early-stage slow motion downwind ballet as our Race Committee started the fleet. In this the 43rd running of the Lloyd Harbor YC's Stratford Shoals race, now named in Ed's memory, we had an excellent showing by boats from the Huntington and... Long Island Sound areas. When the Southerly filled in the fleet was still pretty compressed due to a large bubble of warm air parked over the Sound, so there were good visual references to gauge one's progress toward the light. As the boats rounded the light more than one fisherman was kind enough to move so the racers could pick their way around the shallows and prepare to beat home. The only substantive change in positions we noticed on the beat home was Dave Largey's Hobie 33 C'EST LA VIE, rolling no fewer than 7 boats to leeward, including a Frers 33, two S2's, a Baltic 38, a J/80, a Bene 36.7, and an Ericson 39. That little boat can move! As the finishing RC brought the boats home, the finishers would correct into their respective places: Division 1, Double-Handed, the order would be local champs Phil Walters and Glenn Suss's J/80 BLUR, Adrian Little's Jeanneau 3600 HELIOS, and local heroes Bob and June Kendrick's Frers 41 PALANTIR. Division 2, Jib-and-Main's podium would be filled with all local Huntington Bay talent-- Jack Posner's Hunter 34 JUMPING JACK FLASH, Mike Sterflinger's KISMET IV, and Dan Corcoran's Bene-393 BREEZE PLEEZE. In Division 3, the top 3 boats would correct within 8 minutes of each other, in this order: Bob Siegel's J/109 PAX (despite her bumper-boat start!), Christian Kramer's C-32 SIX BROTHERS, and our own Past Commodore Bob Carballal's J/100 DAY TRIPPER. Finally, in Division 4, the order would be led by LHYC Member Kieran Glackin's J/105 TEAM NOT SHAKEDOWN, Past LHYC Commodore Joe Scarpulla's J/105 TRIFECTA, and local champion Rich Corell's Loki III. On behalf of the LHYC's Officers and Board, I extend my thanks to our Regatta Committees led by Jay Meyer and Bill Maher, and all the competitors in this most excellent day of Lloyd Harbor YC Racing. Fair winds, Cesar Vallejos Fleet Captain, LHYC

After a perfect week for sailing, Block Island Race Week is over. In today's BI times, the cover photo shows two J/44s being led by Lloyd Harbor YC member Don Rave's RESOLUTE. In all, there were 170 yachts racing in 15 divisions, and LHYC had 7 entries in five of those divisions. Four LHYC yachts finished in the top four positions and two, Jeff Willis's CHALLENGE and Chris Schneider's RASCAL, came in first place. More updates to follow...

Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club 03.01.2020

This year LHYC is proud to be represented by no fewer than seven entries in the Block Island Race Week starting Monday 22nd June. We wish the skippers and crews of the yachts BRILLIANT, CHALLENGE IV, ORION, RASCAL, RESOLUTE, RUMOR & SHAKEDOWN well and will be toasting their efforts at the various watering holes. Additionally, local boat LOKI 3 will be on the line with LHYC and Harbor Boating Club sailors aboard. Be sure to follow their adventures on Yachtscoring and on the race website!

Dear LHYC Members and Friends, We are almost there... this weekend will see an historic regatta take place in our local waters. In 1894 the By Laws of the Huntington YC called for three annual regattas to be held. The Huntington Day Race is one of them, and it has been held annually for 120 years. Saturday will mark the 121st year and it will be followed by the 49th annual running of the Lloyd's Trophy.... Although we are now working on the scratch sheet and last minute revisions to the SIs, there is still time to register! We have extended the early registration discount until tomorrow midnight. If you enter after the Scratch is published, then please announce accordingly to the RC. There will be two divisions, Spinnaker and Jib-and-Main. We have a competent RC crew from the yachts RIFT and SURPRISE, and HYC members Hank and Claire Krussman are kindly providing their yacht LADY CLAIRE as the regatta's signal boat. The weather promises to be just lovely with a southerly breeze at 6-12Kt. And all racers and guests are welcome at HYC for a post-race BBQ. The fee is $20 per person. So, what say ye... Will you join us on the water? It's not too late-- in fact last night one shiny red 36-footer joined the fleet for Summer Series... perhaps she'll be on the line Saturday..? You are probably thinking of the projects you have left to do before you start racing again... well, I'll let you get to them, but first go to the link above and register for this weekend's regatta! Best, Cesar Vallejos Fleet Captain, LHYC Trivia Contest: If you are the first person to identify the names and history behind the other two HYC Annual Regattas, there is a cocktail with your name on it.

Lloyd Harbor Yacht Club 06.11.2019

We had a great kickoff to the 2015 racing season with the Spring Series Race for the Case this past weekend. Special thanks to the visiting boats from Kings Point and Breakwater Irregulars, and especially for our PROs and RC volunteers, without whom we could not have held this event. The weather was a challenge on both days, but on Saturday we managed to get two races off after some initial postponement.... First race went off in fairly steady breeze but up the W/L course things got shifty and there were some lead changes. Because of launch schedules, the first division, in JAM, would consist of only two boats, Jumping Jack Flash and Veronica, and they would finish their course 1-2. In Spinnaker-2, the finishing order would have the three visiting boats from the USMMA, Sabotage, Santana and Sting in sequence, setting up a challenge for the local boats. In Spin-3, it would be local heroes Double Vision and Dreadlocks, followed by the new girl on the block, Tropique Sailing presents Mousse. Yes, folks that was the registered boat name! Race 2 would be a bit more straightforward, just once around, and with some boats having shaken their cobwebs and feeling like Summer again. However, a shifting wind made the downwind leg a close reach which favored heavily the windward side of the course. Finishing order for JAM-1 would be as in Race 1, Jumping Jack Flash and Veronica. Spin-2's finishing order would see the local boats shut out the cadets with Brilliant, Shakedown and Rift coming in 1-2-3. Spin-3 would see Tropique Sailing presents Mousse (yes, kids, that's still the name) earn a bullet, followed by Dreadlocks and Double Vision Sunday we enjoyed a lovely, albeit windless day on the Sound. After a postponement that saw the lunch hour come and go and the cocktail hour almost arrive, the brave RC put out a tiny course and the boats were expecting some slow motion ballet. Jam-1 got a slow start upwind and had almost rounded by the time the other two divisions were trying to start with their spinnakers up! Alas, the shifted breeze would not hold and racing was abandoned around 1400. The "racing" wrapped up, the boats put away, and most of the participation gifts awarded, the LHYC Officers and volunteers called it a day and some even wrapped up a beautiful Sunday with lovely meals and well-deserved naps in shady corners of Long Island. Come join us in our Summer Series-- 10 days of weeknight racing May thru late July! Registration and details on the club website... Yours truly, Cesar Vallejos Fleet Captain, LHYC

Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society Huntington Harbor Parade of Lights For Immediate Release... We are sorry to report that, due to some upcoming work that will be taking place in Huntington Harbor, the 2014 Huntington Lighthouse Boat Parade/Parade of Lights has been cancelled. Tugboats, barges and ancillary vessels are presently positioning themselves into Huntington Harbor to begin a long awaited dredging project, and additional vessels will be soon be arriving to start the rebuilding of the bulkheads in Halesite. These vessels will impede the channel at the south end of the harbor, making it impossible to navigate safely through the parade route. There is no safe alternate route. Safety on the waterfront is our first and foremost concern, and while we are disappointed that we can’t celebrate this event this year, we are excited about the improvements to our beautiful harbor and promise to make the 2015 Boat Parade better and more exciting than ever. We extend our heartfelt wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to the entire Huntington community and we thank you for your understanding and, as always, your great spirit and continued support! Best wishes, Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society
