Yesterday was the final day of our 2020 cruise season. Tomorrow our boats will be heading for winter storage at a Niagara River boatyard. With the rise of Covid-19 and its impact on all of our lives, we would like to thank everyone who cruised with us under restricted circumstances and for their support. Let us all hope that 2021 is a better year. In the meantime, the Canalside portion of our business remains open. Give us a call (716-433-6155) to discuss your wedding, anniversary, shower, business meeting, etc. needs. We will work with you to make for a successful event. WANTED! At 2:45 PM today, this squirrel was observed running off Lockview V. It had been disturbed by a crew member. The squirrel was then watched as it scrambled up into a tree adjacent to the boat where it had hidden a previously stolen homemade Chocolate Chip cookie. The thief came down and brazenly began devouring the cookie 20 feet away from the crew member.

This year's winning photo was that of the Lockport Locks, our stomping ground.

The original Erie Canal cost $7 million to build and construction took place between 1817 to 1825. The legislative act allowing bonds to be sold to finance the canals' construction specified a maximum interest rate of 6 percent. This apparently was the interest rate which the bonds actually paid. Over the period from 1824 to 1882 the total tolls collected amounted to approximately $121 million. This ranged from $300 thousand in 1824 to $4.5 million in 1862. (San Jose St. Univ....) Traveling between Albany and Buffalo cost $3.63 per person or $5.44 with meals included.

This afternoon I went to the Locks will the goal of taking pictures of the waters below Lock 34 as it empties. As the lock empties its 2.5 million gallons of ...water the canal gets quite angry for a short while. The canal can rival that of the lower Niagara River for a short time. The lock keeper John said that he would go "4 lights" for me. In other words, he was going to open the valves all the way to eleven. It didn't take too long before the lock doors would open and out would come the tour boat. Most photos of the canal show its calm and soothing waters. I hope that these photos show something a little different and do it justice. If you ever get a chance you can carefully stand there for yourself and watch. #lockport #lockportny #lovelockport #explorelockport #projectlockport #eriecanal #lock34 #clintonsditch #newyorkstate #niagaracounty #runlockport #milebymilelockport #jefftracyphotography

Boat ride lasted for about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Was fun, relaxing, and informative. The captain takes you up and down two locks (basically, an elevator for boats) with the boat rising about 50 feet higher than the starting point. Drinks (including alcoholic) and light snacks are available for purchase on the boat as well. The boat has two floors that you are able to freely walk up and down throughout the trip. Crew was friendly and knowledgeable and the price was fair. Would definitely recommend trying it out. Reviewed by Sam Zargary on Google
