Long Beach Middle School 09.11.2020

Today is Monday November 9th. It is a Green Day 2. Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: Your Personal Bill of Rights: Part of setting healthy boundaries is taking time to recognize your rights as a person. You have the right to establish boundaries that keep you physically and emotionally safe. It is up to you if you like to hug all your friends or just fist-bump, or even if too much sarcasm makes you uncomfortable. Set your own bill of rightssomething like... I have th...e right to be treated with kindness I have the right to be heard I have the right to say no I have the right to walk away when something isn’t right I have the right to stand up for others and myself Think about your bill of rights when you feel like your boundaries aren’t being respected. If needed, put them into action with confidence! In honor of Native American History Month: As we honor the history making election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, let's remember Charles Curtis in Topeka Kansas, Charles Curtis was elected Vice President to Herbert Hoover in 1929 and became the first person of Native American heritage to hold the office. . His mother belonged to the Kaw tribe and he was the great-grandson of White Plume, a Kaw chief who had offered to help Lewis & Clark during their expedition in 1804. Remember that Native American History is American History! Announcements: Choose Love 30 Days of Gratitude Create a Thank You Sign to Show your appreciation for essential workers who work hard to make sure we stay safe, healthy and keep our daily lives moving along. Write down an expression of gratitude for these people and then get creative with your sign. Place the sign in a window so others can see it as they pass your home, office, or classroom. By practicing gratitude, you will feel better and more optimistic! "The Thanksgiving drive was going to end on Friday the 13th , but will extend to Monday, the 16th. We have many things to be thankful for- the reopening of school is top of the list. Please give a Long Beach family one more reason to be thankful this year by donating food. It would be great to see students returning to school on the 12th with a food donation as a way of paying it forward. Thanks for putting the Giving in Thanksgiving."

Today is Friday November 6th. It is a Blue Day 2. Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: Get Cozy: There will be days when you just need to do nothing; it is important to learn to relax. Take a day to put on cozy clothes, watch a movie, read a good book, and connect with family. Giving yourself permission to relax helps you reset your energy levels so you can begin again and bring your best self to whatever you do. ... In honor of Native American History Month: Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Apache Tribe. However, since he was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led large numbers of men beyond his own following. He surrendered to US troops and spent the last two decades of his life as a prisoner of war. Celebrate Native American Heritage month with the more you know because Native History is American History. Announcements: Choose Love 30 Days of Gratitude Appreciate Yourself Think about 3 things you love about yourself. Write down each appreciation on its own sticky note. Place the notes on your wall, mirror or another surface. Read each note out loud 3 times. Although it may seem odd, reminding yourself about the amazing qualities you possess is highly beneficial for your mental health. Positive affirmations help you cope with stress, improve your mood, and serve as motivation. "The Thanksgiving drive was going to end on Friday the 13th , but will extend to Monday, the 16th. LBMS Picture Day will be on Friday, November 20th (green cohort) and Monday, November 23rd (blue cohort). Due to social distancing requirements and the inability to allow the photographers into the building, we are holding it outside our courtyard under canopies. In order to protect students from potential bad weather, we will have them line up inside the building, then go out briefly for their picture and come right back in. Fully remote students will be able to have their... picture taken on Monday, November 23rd between 3:00-4:00pm in the courtyard space. If students are unable to come to school at that time, they can take their picture at home and then upload it to the picture company’s website located here: https://remotepictureday.com/ We are asking for our students to dress nicely - suit or tie not required. This picture will be their student ID photo and, for 8th graders, their yearbook photo. All sales are handled online so students should not bring any money to school with them. Parents will receive a code from Irvin Simon, the picture company, that allows them online access to purchase the student’s photo. Again, there will be no money collected on Picture Day. Picture Day make-up dates will occur on December 21 & 22 (during lunch periods) for students who were absent or not satisfied with their original pictures.

Today is Thursday November 5th . It is a Green Day 1. Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: Reflect your light: All Middle School students have ups and downs, good days and bad. It’s completely normal to have moments where you feel like you can’t find the light or your positivity. On those days, lean into your support system (friends, family, teachers, counselors, ect.). Get the comfort and support you need. On other days when you're feeling positive and the light is prac...tically bursting right out of you, share it with others and lift them up. Don’t be afraid to let it show! In honor of Native American History Month: Crazy Horse was a Lakota war leader of the Oglala band in the 19th Century. He took up arms against the US federal government to fight against the encroachment by white American settlers on Native American Territory and to preserve the traditional way of life of the Lakota people. His participation in several famous battles like the Fettermen fight and the Battle of Little Big Horn, earned him great respect from his enemies as well as his own people. Crazy Horse ranks among the most notable and iconic of Native American Warriors and was honored by the US Postal service in 1982 with a Great Americans series postal stamp. Celebrate Native American Heritage with the more you know because Native History is American History. Announcements: Choose Love 30 Days of Gratitude Find a comfy and quiet space where you can focus and follow along with this guided meditation. By doing a grateful meditation and looking inward to find things you like about yourself, you can boost your self-esteem and have a happy, healthy, grateful heart "The Thanksgiving drive was going to end on Friday the 13th , but will extend to Monday, the 16th. Today is Wednesday November 4th . It is a Blue Day 1. Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: Ask yourself 3 Questions: Learning to live your life through the lens of positive thinking takes time and intentionality. You might not always know what the best decision is when you're faced with a challenge. When this happens, ask yourself these 3 questions to make sure you are making the most positive choices for yourself: Does this choice help me reach my goals?... Am I experiencing positive emotions through this choice? Is this something that I feel passionate about? In honor of Native American Heritage Month: Black Hawk was a band leader and warrior of the Sauk Native American tribe in what is now the mid-west of the United States. During the War of 1812, Black Hawk fought on the side of the British against the US in the hope of pushing white American settlers away from Sauk Territory. Black Hawk earned his status as war chief or captain by leading raiding and war parties as a young man and then a band of Sauk warriors in the Black Hawk War of 1832. He was captured after the war by US forces and shortly after being released from custody, Black Hawk told his story to an interpreter. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush proclaimed November, National American Indian Heritage Month, celebrating and recognizing the accomplishments of the peoples who were the original inhabitants, explorers and settlers of the United States. Let’s talk about and remember Crispus Attucks. An African American man killed during the Boston Massacre and believed to be the first casualty of the American Revolution. He was the son of a former slave and a Native Indian. He was the first to fall for freedom and in 1888 a statue in Boston Commons recognized his contribution to the freedom of the United States. Celebrate with the more you know and remember, Native American History is American History.

Today is Monday, November 2. It is a Green Day 2. Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: The World Needs YOU: You might find yourself wondering about your purpose or calling sometimes. It is a common thought for most people. ... Here is a big secret: You can have more than one purpose and more than one calling. You aren’t locked into one thing because you have a gift for it, and there is no rule that you have to follow a straight path from point A to point B. In fact, it’s the twists and turns that help you figure out who you really are. Take those twists and turns. See what you’re made of! You’ll find your way. 30 Days of Gratitude Gratitude is defined as the feeling or expression of thankfulness and appreciation toward yourself, others, people, places, or things. Today is Wednesday October 28th, it is a Blue Day1 Mrs. Beard’s positive thinking for today: Be a Good Listener: Arguments and resentment don’t often end in positive change.
