Please NO fake spider webs. Wildlife very often get caught in it and suffer if not found in time.
As the weather cools mice will be looking for a warm home. Please avoid sticky traps and poison that also poisons unintended victims.
Please cut the strings before you discard that mask.
Please do me a favor and share this so we can protect our pets around the Town of Oyster Bay!
This Eagle was tangled with a balloon, and it’s string. This is why balloons should be banned. She was stuck to the tree for about 24 hrs. The eagle finally chewed themself free about 8 pm. Thank god someone on a kayak, noticed it. Can’t thank you enough.
Helpful tips from our friends at Howell Nature Center.
We bet you didn’t know all the wonderful ways possums help Mother Nature.
Tips Plant bee friendly plants and herbs in your yard and garden. This helps provide bees with forage. Always avoid spraying chemicals as it may get into the nectar and affect the bee. Plant the same type of bloom together! Although the you may think weeds are bad, they're a good thing for the bees! Try not to pull out all of your weeds because weeds are one of the most important sources of food for bees. A yard full of weeds is a yard for the bees! ... Buy local, organic food from your local farmer. Buying local means eating seasonally, and buying from a farmer you know can help you tell if your food is coming from a mono culture or not. You could also learn how to be a bee keeper with sustainable practices. Many local bee associations offer practices and classes that help you and your community keep the bees Alive. REMEMBER, honey bees are NOT out to get you. Honey bees are simply vegetarians, and all they want is to collect nectar and pollen and bring it back to the hive. Bees are constantly mistaken for being the ones who want to sting you when they see you, but that's only the hornets and wasps. Their are many ways to avoid being stung by a honey bee. 1) if a be lands on you, stay calm and cool, because all they are doing is resting or smelling you. They can sense anger and fear which causes them to panic and sting you. Little do people know that bees die once they sting someone. 2) don't stand in front or near a hive opening. Bees will go in defense mode for their hive and possibly sting. Don't bother the hive or shake it, because again the bees will sense you and try and protect their queen and the honey. 3)remember that wasps are the meat eaters. They like you lunch meat and soda and can sting up to numerous times. Know the difference! Also, bees are always thirsty. Leaving a small bowl of water out for the bees can help save the bees. This is something that anyone can do. If bees aren't coming to pollinate your flowers, putting out water with a few rocks can attract the bees. They will help your flowers and you will be helping them. Last, but not least, get the word out! You'd be surprised with how many people don't know how badly the bees are endangered, and may think they can't do anything to help. You can give them these tips and show them how they can contribute to helping out your community and the bee community. It's a win win situation for all of us.
