Shirley Goldfarb: An American Painter in Paris, is on view online via LorettaHoward.com. Link to exhibition in bio! The narrative of abstract painting in America, in particular abstract expressionist paintingonce a gated, (white) male preservehas undergone radical revisions in the past few years. The previously overlooked contributions by women artists--Native American, white, Black, Hispanic, Asianare at last being acknowledged, necessitating a long overdue re-evaluation ...of the movement. Although each story was individual, there were common societal forces that impinged upon these women’s lives and careers in ways that did not hamper male artistsin America, France and elsewhere. Paris was in some ways seemingly more open minded, particularly in the milieux Goldfarb habituated. -Lilly Wei Photo: Portrait of Shirley Goldfarb circa 1970, Paris, France. Cleve Gray: Paintings on Paper is now open at Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art, 521 West 26th, New York, NY, and on view at Lorettahoward.com The works span from the Ceres Series in the 1960s to the Roman Notes of the 1970s and the Calligraphic Abstractions of the 1980s. In this exhibition, Cleve Gray’s dramatic body of works on paper trace over thirty years of production. These works touch upon the rigors of French modernism, the ethos of Abstract Expressionism and the meditative restraint of Chinese and Japanese scroll painting. Some detail shots from Cleve Gray: A Painter of All Possible Worlds. Online exhibition link in bio! Also, be sure to check out the online exhibition catalogue with essay by New York-Based art critic, curator, and journalist, Lilly Wei @ellekaywei In the paintings on view, a sinewy calligraphic line dominates the foreground. Here, the traditional@art historical rivalry between line and color is looted, since the line - or more accurately, the string of brushstrokes - is as much voluptuous color as it is cerebral line. That color/line seems fluid at first, riverine, but upon closer scrutiny, it’s breakages are evident. It might not be too much to call it a metaphor, the emblematic unfurling of a life’s progress. -Lilly Wei

Richard Anuszkiewicz, Translumina - Inner Yellow Light from Richard Anuszkiewicz: Translumina Series (1989-1993) at Loretta Howard Gallery in February/March of 2018. . The ideas I work on are essentially timeless. If you’re working with present-day matter, your work can grow old and unimportant. Working with basic ideas will always be exciting, and if color or form is visually exciting in any profound sense, it will be that way ten or twenty years from now also. -Richard Anuszkiewicz (1930-2020)
