Do you know the difference between hunger and appetite? We hear these two words used interchangeably, and at first it may seem like they’re synonyms. But they refer to two entirely different things! Hunger is our biological need for food. We refer to hunger when we are talking about one of the main things our bodies need to survive. It is the physical need we feel after not eating for a few hours, and our glucose levels are low, so we must refuel by eating.... Appetite is about emotions. To get technical, it is a sensory reaction to food (looking/smelling tasty) which creates our body’s response, like stomach rumbling or mouth watering. These are responses we may recognize as ‘hunger’ but they are actually our brains reacting to the food we see or smell i.e. appetite. To put it simply, hunger is the need for food. Appetite is the desire for food. If not recognized and controlled, our appetites can lead us to overeating after we have satisfied our hunger. How can we differentiate feelings of hunger from our appetite? One way is to check in on our hunger levels before eating. Ask yourself: When was the last time you ate? Could a small nutritious snack, like fruits or nuts, keep you satisfied until your next meal? Also, eating mindfully is one of the best ways to recognize our fullness levels and to avoid temptation, thereby avoiding overeating. Checking in with ourselves and paying attention to our senses and fullness levels as we eat can ensure that we stop when our body tells us it’s full. If you are having trouble recognizing your body’s needs, and want to learn how to eat mindfully, click the link in our bio to book a 1:1 FREE consultation call! . . . . . . . #hunger #appetite #infographic #nutritioninfo #nutritioninformation #dietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #nutritioncoach #nutritiontips #nycnutritionist #nutritionistapproved #holisticnutritionist #fertilitynutrition #prenatalnutrition #thyroidhealing #thyroidnutrition #pcosdiet #thyroiddiet #hashimotosdiet #hormonebalance #hormonenutrition #endocrine #nycdietitian See more

Do you regularly check in with your body? Do you listen to your body when it tells you to take a break? Have you heard of Hashimoto's disease?... Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder that leads to a lower release of thyroid hormones and the immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid gland. When the thyroid is under-functioning it can affect hormone balance, decrease metabolism, and lead to extreme fatigue, hair loss, and/or joint pain. The symptoms of Hashimoto's disease can flare up when you don't listen to your body's needs. Do you recognize any of these symptoms? Each person’s symptoms vary, you may have one or you may have few. We recommend getting blood work done if you believe any of these symptoms apply to you. If you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, click the link in our bio to work with us, so we can create a program specific to you and your needs. *disclaimer: This account is for educational purposes only, no medical advice is given. . . . . . . . #hashimotos #hashimotosdisease #symptoms #flareups #yourneeds #prioritizeyou #hashimoto #dietitian #dietitiansofinstagram #nutritioncoach #nutritiontips #nycnutritionist #nutritionistapproved #holisticnutritionist #fertilitynutrition #prenatalnutrition #thyroidhealing #thyroidnutrition #pcosdiet #thyroiddiet #hashimotosdiet #hormonebalance #hormonenutrition #endocrine #nycdietitian See more

Winter is approaching and with the risk of COVID numbers increasing, we want to let our customers know that we are still here for you nutritionally. Luckily, before the Pandemic we already had the systems in place to smoothly transition to TeleHealth services and maintained our 1:1 consults with our clients. We’ve faced many challenges and changes but we have never lost sight of our purpose which is to provide nutrition education to our clients so that they can continue to re...ach their health goals. As health practitioners we devote our days to educating our clients on the science of food & nutrition, while listening to their individual needs and struggles to develop plans that will fit their preferences and lifestyles. How we have changed: In July we said goodbye to our main office in the Financial District and in September we decided not to renew our lease in the NoMad but this does not mean we are closed. Rather, we’ve adjusted with the times and are dedicated to continue serving our clients through virtual appointments. Our consults can be conducted from anywhere in the world as long as you have WiFi! How we serve: Virtual sessions have proven to be just as effective as in-person appointments. Our software and apps are filled with accountability features, goal setting, chat features to communicate with your nutritionist between sessions, and includes all intake forms and required paperwork to get started. We adjust our meetings and programs based on your needs to make sure you are getting the best level of care. We do not believe in fad diets, nor do we push unnecessary supplements or protein powders. As scientifically-trained nutrition experts, we conduct an Initial Consultation to listen to your health goals and discuss the 6 pillars of health and wellness to create a wellness plan that is right for you. How we help you navigate through medical billing questions: Once you book a discovery call with us, you are connected to our medical biller. Anna is always available to you to answer your questions and to determine your coverage prior to your appointment. Apply to work 1:1 with us by following this link to book your free call today! https://calendly.com/anna-newyorkcitynutrition/15m

Can you really "boost" your immune system? Your immune system is the network of cells, organs and tissues that work to defend your body from foreign invaders, like disease and viruses. In light of the Coronavirus panic, we wanted to share some simple tips to help you stay healthy. While there is no cure or vaccine yet, following these recommendations can lessen symptoms of sickness. Get enough sleep... Proper sleep hygiene promotes a healthy immune system. Get enough sleep (6-7 hours) and turn off screens 30 minutes to an hour before going to bed. Consume large meals at least two hours before lying down. Keep stress in check Constantly feeling stressed keeps us in a fight-or-flight mode, which prevents the body from fighting off illness. Studies actually show that people with less stress are less likely to develop cold symptoms. Try a guided meditation (Google "free meditation" - there are so many resources!), go for a walk outside, or speak to a therapist. If you can't leave your home, try a telehealth service like @talkspace. Avoid excess alcohol Resist the urge to imbibe and try another stress-busting activity. Excess alcohol weakens the body's immune response. The @usda guidelines recommend no more than 1 drink per day for women and 2 for men. Eat a balanced diet Consume whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains and good quality protein (think beans, fish and lean meat). Eating a balanced diet ensures your body is taking in enough vitamins and minerals. Choose whole foods before supplements, unless instructed otherwise by a healthcare provider. Check your Vitamin D Some research suggests that vitamin D can lower risks for respiratory illness. If you know that your vitamin D levels are low, consider consuming vitamin D-rich foods like fish, dairy and eggs. Please take care of yourselves and, most importantly, stay calm. BIG NEWS! Over the past year we have made some major changes and we cannot wait to share them with you over our next few posts/weeks! I am excited to announce that Lorraine Kearney Nutrition is now New York City Nutrition! LKN has grown and expanded together with our new dietitians, services and expertise. Because of these wonderful achievements, I realized my brand name should expand as well and New York City Nutrition was born. Over the past year... we’ve worked on the rebranding of our services and I am now READY to unveil it to you! As our clientele grew, I listened to each of them feel misunderstood and unsure on how to properly implement lifestyle changes they so desperately wanted. I began to build a team of dietitians who would help, encourage and support them. My passion is to create an environment where my clients can come, speak openly and work with a nutritionist or dietitian that takes the time to explain the science of food and why we are implementing the changes that are needed. I envisioned an environment where all women can discuss their health goals, feel heard, and have a team of wonderful female dietitians who relate and understand them. The dietitians at NYCN believe that each client's health journey is unique and there is not a one shoe that fits all approach when trying to reach nutrition goals. My goal for creating New York City Nutrition is to provide you with the science of food and help you understand how it pertains to YOUR beautiful, one of a kind body. Together, we can help and assist each of you reach your specific nutrition goals. DM with for more info!
