Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! To commemorate this holiday, the LWVNYC office is closed. Our phone lines remain open so voters can call in with questions. Below are resources to get you started on learning more about indigenous peoples, today and beyond. **** What is Indigenous People's Day? For many indigenous folks, Columbus Day is a reminder of the violent centuries of colonial oppression at the hands of European and European-descendant settlers. This painful history still... has present day ramifications. We celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day to honor indigenous communities both of generations past and current, their histories, and their countless acts of resistance in the face of US settler-colonial genocidal policies. **** Reading List of Indigenous Authors An Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer Black Indian by Shonda Buchanan - memoir of poet and educator Shonda Buchanan that traces her family's rich history as Black and Native American mixed race people. Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger - YA fantasy novel about a 17-year-old Lipan Apache girl who uses her powers to awaken ghosts of dead animals to solve her cousin's murder. **** Films to Watch Conscience Point - Screening Tonight! Warrior Women The story of Madonna Thunder Hawk, an American Indian Movement leader who with her daughter, Marcy, fought for Native rights in an environment that made them more comrades than mother-daughter. If you requested an absentee ballot in NYC and received the wrong oath envelope due to an outside vendor error (the one you sign), the NYC BOE asks that you: - Email them at [email protected] - Call them at 1-866-VOTE-NYC... Please double-check that the name and address on your oath envelope are correct before you complete and return it. If your ballot reads "Absentee Military" the BOE informs us this is because a slash was missing and it should read "Absentee/Military." Your ballot is valid and will be processed.
