Moving from a Richard Neutra house designed for him in LA, the wide panoramas of Los Angeles are replaced by lichen covered boulders and majestic trees. Subconsciously perhaps Neutra’s all white palette shifts to black, grey and muted saturated color. Tom Pritchard, architect of the house stands at the bridge between house and dance studio. Loring needed space, gentle light, and quiet to compose his dances and his beloved studio remains the same today a refuge. @ Accord, New York

NYTimes tomorrow features THE RUBBER HOUSE. My first house, designed to be a group of monolithic sculptural forms. Excised of all ornament and typical vernacular house elements the rubber blurs wall and roof together allowing form remain. Before computer aided design, it was imagined and created by hand, many decisions finalized onsite working with a dedicated team of artist/builders. The rounded form of the studio prefigured Richard Gehry and Richard Serra’s Torqued Elli...pses by decades. Designed for choreographer Eugene Loring and later owned by Willem Dafoe. We are working with the new owner on updates and restoration. One of the largest boulders we’ve moved {so far!} this massive beauty anchors the front of the house and provides a pivot point for the sweeping stair to curve around. 1917 Lord and Burnham curved glass conservatory green house. From the Dodge estate Irvington on Hudson, it was salvaged in 1983 and the parts have been in storage ever sense.
