Effective Tuesday, December 8, all punch cards will be sold at the Scale House(6641 Buyea Road, Canastota). The Solid Waste Main Office will be CLOSED to the public due to the rising cases of COVID-19 and limited staff resources. If you need to buy a punch card, residents can still buy them from the Scale House (next driveway over from the main office) or from designated local gas stations and businesses. To see a list of all of our local vendors who sell punch cards, please visit: www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2468/Punch-Card-Vendors. Please be advised that some local vendors may have reduced hours during this time. If possible, call ahead to the nearest punch card vendor to make sure they are open. The Scale House, Landfill and Transfer Stations will operate on their normal schedule. We hope everyone is staying healthy and safe!

As the holiday shopping season continues, many of us will be turning to online shopping to find what we need. You can recycle right by folding cardboard boxes and removing any non-paper contaminants such as loose tape or plastic packaging before placing your cardboard boxes in the recycling bin. Do NOT include foam, bubble wrap or shipping envelopes in your recycling bin. However, there are special drop-off recycling programs for these materials. Bulky styrofoam packaging ca...n be brought to our Buyea Road Residential Station for recycling. In addition, plastic film such as bubble wrap, air pillows and plastic shipping envelopes can go back to retail stores as part of their plastic film recycling program. To find a film plastic drop-off location visit www.plasticfilmrecycling.org/ Not sure if an item can be recycled? Try our "How Do I Dispose/Recycle" search tool at: www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2376/Recycling #RecycleRightNY #RethinkWasteMC

Today is America Recycles Day which means it's the perfect time to be extra conscious about recycling right! Did you know that Madison County uses a two bin recycling system--one for plastic, metal and glass containers and one for paper/cardboard. Recyclables should be empty, clean and dry before placing them in your recycling bin. Keep the materials loose -- do not put recyclables in plastic bags. If you're not sure what to recycle, use our online search tool at www.madison...county.ny.gov/2376/Recycling. Type in the name of the item and we'll tell you how to recycle or dispose of it! Or, test your recycling knowledge with our 'RePlay Game.' Sort the materials into the correct outlet and move your way through all 5 levels. Play the game at: https://madisoncountyny.recycle.game/ Happy recycling! #RethinkWasteMC #RecycleRight #AmericaRecyclesDay

Tomorrow is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day but did you know that there are year-round options to dispose of unwanted or expired medication? Frequently cleaning out your medicine cabinets and dropping off the medications at a designated collection site can minimize risk for abuse, misuse and theft while also protecting the environment. Do not throw unwanted medication in the garbage or flush them down the drain. In addition, all NY Kinney Drugs locations hold a Medi...cine Collection Day on the last Saturday of every month. Bring your unwanted non-controlled prescriptions and over-the-counter medications to any Kinney Drugs pharmacy during regular pharmacy hours and they will dispose of them for you. November 15 is America Recycles Day (ARD), a nationally recognized day, dedicated to bringing awareness to and energizing recycling across the United States. Here in Madison County, you can help us celebrate ARD by learning about what we do and do not accept in the recycling bins. You can also test your local recycling knowledge with our online sorting game by dragging items into the correct waste or recycling stream. When you finish the game, print out your recycling certif...icate or replay the game to learn about new materials. Were there any items that confused you? Let us know! To play the game, go to: https://madisoncountyny.recycle.game/ or visit our website at https://www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2376/Recycling and click on the 'RePlay Game' tab on the search tool. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation begins enforcement of the plastic bag ban today, October 19. Here are a few things you should know: -Residents are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags when shopping in order to reduce the amount of waste created. Storing reusable bags in places such as your car, work and backpack/purse will make it easier to remember to bring in your reusable bags once you get to the store. -Clean your reusable bags. Follow basic clean...ing steps to help your reusable bags stay germ-free. The Solid Waste Main Office has free reusable bags that are machine washable and available to residents. Stop by our office Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 4 PM to pick one up! The NYS Health Department also put together some best practices for keeping your bags clean: www.health.ny.gov/publications/2827/ -Stores covered under the NYS Plastic Bag Reduction, Reuse and Recycling Act are still required to collect plastic bags and other film plastics such as bread bags and bubble wrap for recycling. Head over to www.plasticfilmrecycling.org to learn about the types of plastic wrap that can be recycled at your local grocery store.
