READY, SET, VOTE! Starting TODAY, Saturday, October 24, until Sunday, November 1st, New York’s registered voters can begin making their voices heard in the upcoming general election. So much is at stake for immigrant, Black, brown, and working-class communities in the fight for respect and dignity for all. Our fight to fund excluded workers, cancel rent, repeal the walking while trans ban, ending the school-to-prison pipeline, and more are all on the ballot this year. ... Make your voice heard, thinking of the world we want to build for future generations, but also voting on behalf of those whose voices can’t be heard at the polls, like undocumented immigrants. Find your early voting poll site and make a plan to make your voice heard starting TODAY. voteearlyny.org

This week, trans community members and allies rallied outside of Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s Bronx office to demand he bring the repeal #WalkingWhileTrans ban to a floor vote! 81 Assembly members are now co-sponsoring the legislation. Since 1976, the loitering statute has allowed law enforcement across the state of New York to profile and criminalize Black and brown cisgender and transgender women, gender expansive and non-binary people for expressing their gender in publ...ic. The police have used excuses such as wearing tight jeans and tight tank showing cleavage, tight pants showing curves of lower body, wearing tight-fitting dress" to criminalize transgender women under the vague code of "loitering with the intent for prostitution" P.L. 240.37. Trans community gathered outside Speaker Heastie’s Bronx office to share their stories and the urgent need to repeal this penal code by passing A654/S2253 to protect our communities from the constant harassment from police. Take action for Black and brown trans women now! https://p2a.co/gsqefkx

"A growing body of evidence says that a critical first step [to achieve holistic safety in schools] is to defund the budget for cops in schools and invest in counselors, mental health service and wrap-around services for young people and their families instead." Alex Vitale, professor of sociology at Brooklyn College writes for New York Daily News calling for #PoliceFreeSchools and #CounselorsNotCops.
