In her warped paintings, Valerie Hegarty recreates classic American paintings and then reconfigures them so as to highlight the fraught aspects of the American myth that such artworks represented. In Crumpled Clipper Ship, Hegarty desecrates imagery from the genre of American nautical art - recontextualizing the clipper ship in a manner that acknowledges its role in the transatlantic slave trade, mercantilism and the subjugation of indigenous populations.
