The Manlius Fire Department is deeply saddened to share the sudden passing of one of our life members, David Garwood. David was a 31 year member of the department, filling the roles of firefighter, apparatus operator, EMS, Fire Company President, friend and brother. David loved the fire service and spent his time not only volunteering for the community, but also representing fire departments throughout New York State in his law work. David will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. In 2017, the Foundation created Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters to recognize the 25th anniversary of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Normally, Members of the Manlius Fire Departme...nt would travel to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland to participate in the Honor Guard during the memorial weekend. This year, we will be honoring the 82 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019, as well as 21 firefighters who died in previous years, by lighting our firehouse red!! Please join us in remembering our fallen Brothers and Sisters by Lighting the Night Red all this week!! #nffflightthenight2020 National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

Members had the opportunity to train on conventional forcible entry using our door prop. Crews also practiced "through the lock" forcible entry as well as other non-destructive means of entry. Proficiency is key when lives are on the line!

Special Thanks to WSYR for highlighting the need to educate the public on fire safety and to our Chief Fire Protection Specialist 3 Guy Swartwout for his excellent message as always.

National Teen Driver Safety Week begins today! Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the U.S. Make sure you’ve established the #Rule...sForTheRoad to keep them safe. 1 RISK TAKING-Don’t do something you’ll regret for the rest of your life. Car crashes are the leading cause of injury and death for teens. And it’s not just about you: Crashes affect pedestrians, passengers and other drivers, as well as their families. 2 TEXTING & TALKING-Focus on driving. Texting increases crash risk by 23 times. Talking on a cell phone while driving can double reaction time. Save the texting, phone calls and other gadgets for after the driving is done. 3 UN-BUCKLED-Use a safety belt and insist that all your passengers do so as well. About two-thirds of teens killed in vehicle crashes were not wearing safety belts. Wearing a seat belt reduces your chances of being hurt or killed in a crash by 45 percent. 4 MUSIC-Turn the music off while learning to drive. Adjusting the radio or cd player or searching your iPod are common distractions for teen drivers. 5 SPEED-Stick to the speed limit. One-third of teen fatalities involve speeding. Obeying the speed limit reduces the severity of a crash you can’t avoid. 6 ROWDY RIDERS-Don’t load up your car with friends. Adding one teen passenger to a vehicle increases a teen driver’s crash risk by about 50 percent. With two or more teen passengers, the crash risk is fivefold. 7 DUI/DRUGS-Stay sober and drug-free. The risk of involvement in a motor vehicle crash is greater for teens under the influence of alcohol or drugseven prescription drugs. 8 LATE NIGHT DRIVING-Teen crash rates at night (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) are twice as high as daytime rates. Obey parental curfews. 9 PEER PRESSURE-Make good choices and don’t be afraid to speak up. Before you get in the car with a friend, ask: Is this a person you trust? Is he in the right frame of mind to drive safely? Are you prepared to speak up if he drives dangerously? 10 OVERCONFIDENCE-Overconfidence can lead to crashes when new drivers encounter unfamiliar or unexpected situations. Parents should supervise and monitor their teen driverseven after they get their license.

Welcome to the Manlius Fire Department. Normally, the Manlius Fire Department holds an open house this time of year. But just like everything else, COVID has changed what we can do this year. Since we are not yet able to have you at our station and open our doors to the public, we decided to bring our station to you!! Part-2 of our Virtual Apparatus Tours will take you through Engine-1, Tanker/Pumper 6 (TP-6) and our Brush Truck (M-1). https://youtu.be/sSOK70Xim6k
