This is a posting from someone else but needs to be shared so everyone can understand what is happening to the small business owners. Dentist are probably in e ...worst position. Others are close behind. All need our communities to support us and help us survive. As I prepare to return to the office tomorrow, I am reflecting on everything that’s happened over the last 2 months to my colleagues. Almost daily we are hearing of another dentist committing suicide over the stress of all of this. I didn’t write the following piece but it is all so true. I just opened my FB page and I'm shaken by the news of another dentist's life cut short. Dentists are a silent tragedy of COVID19: While big business, airlines, and medical healthcare get bailed out, get financial subsidies, are sent supplies, and regaled as heroes...dentistry is left behind. While other small businesses can redesign their model and go online or curbside, dentistry is left behind. The independent dental practice that may be first generation or the fourth. The one that has been built upon family, blood sweat and tears and trust of our patients....forgotten in COVID19. We in dentistry donated our PPE, and are now getting price gouged to replenish our supplies. In some states dentists are required to inventory their supplies so that is can be confiscated should it be needed. For years we paid in to unemployment insurance, only to be told we are not allowed to collect. We have business closure insurance, but are told that it is not covered in this scenario. We may or may not have gotten the PPP, but the restrictions on it are that we will not get it as a grant, but a loan...one that we didn't need or want before March 17 and didn't really want to take...but faced with uncertainty needed to stay afloat. The assistance we were promised when we would reopen in 3 weeks....and now it is going on 8, 9, 10 weeks. We are deemed essential....but are only allowed to perform emergency services. Those of us who abide by the law stand by as our colleagues continue to see patients. But to see patients would be at the risk of jail time, license loss and not having our malpractice carrier cover us. But we watch as the public questions why we are closed but they are open. Our costs to protect our patients and staff have exponentially grown but we are told that insurance carriers will not increase compensation nor will they allow us to offset the cost. We have families who depend on us for their livelihood, yet they may not want to come back to work because of the fear of contracting this virus, or because the government has made it more profitable to stay home. Dentists have to maneuver through the ever changing FDA, CDC, OSHA regulations that must be followed for fear of substantial fines. These, these are but a few of the stressors that lead a dentist to choose death over life. These are the stressors that YOUR dentist has been facing for the past 2 months. These are the same stressors that are facing many small business owners during COVID19 Quarantine. Dentists and other small business owners need more than just your business right now. They need you to be supportive, attentive, and to be kind. The stress, financial and mental fatigue during this time is insufferable. If you need to talk about all this stress please reach out. PM me please.
