IT'S SO TAXING! Every year. Every single year.... I say I’m going to take one day every month and stay on top of my taxes. And every year. Every single year. I leave them to the last minute. I’m guessing I am not alone here. When I’m standing at the front of a class of training artists, I am keenly aware of their breakthroughs and their tendencies. And their tendencies become the seeds for creating dramatic exercises to overcome them. So it seems I should be able to make the leap from the stage to life and create an exercise to resolve this ongoing tendency to not stay on top of my taxes. An exercise to stop... Procrastinating. Dithering. Vacillating. We’re all guilty of a little dilly-dallying now and then. And while on the surface we could easily identify this as the tendency to overcome. I’m suspicious this puzzle is more complex. And this musing is about more than procrastination. From my view, I see that actors are generous beings ready to fully invest themselves into a given circumstance. So much so that each moment becomes paramount. Paramount, but void of a past. And unprepared for the future. In this orphaned state, all our generosity can not make up for the creative inspiration we are deprived of. Because where we’ve come from and where we are going give dynamic poetic meaning to where we are. Having blinders on and seeing only what is right in front of us is the tendency we need to focus on. Each year I start out perfectly on track and diligently record my taxable spendings. By month two I am so caught up in the tidal wave of life I just can’t seem to fit this task in. By month three, I’ve utterly forgotten my plan altogether. And by tax time I’m frantic, and kicking myself for once again leaving it all to the last minute. Just like a character who finds themselves reacting to a situation at the end of a play exactly as they did at the beginning. But a character who was aware of their past could intrigue the audience to consider not only this character’s choices, but their own. And a character who kept future goals in mind would equally inspire us to consider what choices are being made in the present. The present becomes incredibly spirited when it is worked upon by the dueling forces of the past and the future. And a present that recognizes past shortcomings is more likely to manifest successful futures. Sometimes I need to repeat things to myself in order for them to sink in... A character that recognizes their past shortcomings is more likely to manifest successful futures. Maybe I’m not so much of a procrastinator when it comes to my taxes. Maybe I’m getting caught up in the moment and forgetting my past and losing sight of my future. And doing so is so taxing! So as I click submit and send this year’s taxes on their cyber journey, I’m going to start this new year with more than a goodwill thought. I’m going to put thought into action and make sure I’m not so swept away in the moment that I end up in the same place. Here’s to building actors who express change and a world where taxes are no longer an annual nightmare! Onward and upward!
