A group of Explorers is examining the recent unprecedented surge of single use plastic personal protective equipment (PPE) disposal during the COVID-19 pandemic.... Marine biologist Justine Ammendola and environmental scientist Jackie Saturno were inspired to take on the project in their hometown of Toronto, Canada. Their new paper out in journal, Environmental Pollution collaborating with Amy Brooks, Shoshanah Jacobs and Jenna R. Jambeck looks specifically at spatial distribution of PPE debris in the metropolitan city. Justine and Jackie report that educational campaigns, providing appropriate waste collection facilities and getting local municipalities and residents to properly dispose of PPE will be key. They said: Plastic isn’t going away. We’re going to rely on it as a species for as long as we’re on this planet. So, how do we manage it in a responsible and sustainable way?
