Classmates, let us all show our support for our fellow Red Fox, Pete Walsh! Peter Walsh '68 knows firsthand the troubling consequences that so many small businesses are facing nationwide caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. On St. Patrick’s Day of this year, after 35 years in business, Coogan’s, the iconic bar in Washington Heights (NYC), closed its doors for the last time. Sad to spread the word of the business closing, gratefulness was also close at hand to Peter and his two bu...siness partners, Tess and Dave. A graduate of the Class of 1968, Peter values the time he had at Marist and the lessons it instilled on him throughout his life. He’s grateful for the opportunity that was presented to him to attend college, an opportunity that in his parents’ generation wasn’t so easily attained. Peter can’t let that lesson go unnoticed, so that’s why he and his partners are paying it forward for small business owners during this time of uncertainty and need. Although their doors will remain closed, Coogan’s has partnered with Facebook and the United Way of NYC to fundraise to help other small businesses in the Washington Heights and surrounding communities. So, if you’ve recently seen this ad on television or YouTube and that guy running through the streets of Washington Heights looks familiar, yes, that’s Marist alumnus and U.S. Army veteran Peter Walsh ’68. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0w2vNztgecI

Fellow classmates and friends, hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. This pandemic has upended life as we knew it. It is hard to imagine what "normal" will be down the road. Hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy those things we once took for granted: gyms, restaurants, salons, barbershops. If the latter two don’t open soon, we’ll all look like "Cousin ITT" from Addams Family!

In these uncertain times it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the 24 hour news shows, rumors and misinformation. Anxiety can wash over you like a tsunami. When that happens here’s something I heard from Pastor Max Lucado: Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. - Philippians 4:6...-7 Maybe you could use a little less worry and a little more CALM right now, too? Follow this prescription for CALM: Celebrating God's goodness, Asking for His help, Leaving your concerns to Him, Meditating on good things
