'Chosen - A ritual in music to Stravinsky's Rite of Spring' is not a dance film proper. Rather, it blends music and dance elements in an equal balance. Stravinsky's own, piano-four-hands transcription of his legendary ballet is the musical base of the work: a less-known version that highlights the score's innovative power while playing down its folkloric touch. The film zooms in on the pianists' hands in their infernal dance on the keyboard, and juxtaposes it to a fragmented, solemn ritual executed by the dancers. This was a complex project to realize, with so many disparate parts, says choreographer Miro Magloire, but it's a version that really can only exist on film, and at the same time it pays tribute to what struck me so much when I listened to the piano version over and over: it's sheer, bold, raw beauty. We are grateful to the Nicholas Roerich Museum in New York, which contains the original paintings of the artist for the 1930 US Premiere of Stravinsky's work, and which made it possible for us to film a discussion with Miro Magloire, pianists Hannah Harnest & Markus Kaitila, and dancer Megan Foley about Ritual in 2020.
