Do you often feel gassy, bloated, have abdominal pain and/or have constipation, diarrhea or alterations episodes of both? You may have irritable bowel syndrome or #IBS. Most us don't talk like to about our bowel habits. But did you know that 1 in 7 adults has irritable bowel syndrome? This month is #IBSAwarenessmonth so stay tuned for more info on IBS and the chance to enter into a giveaway to win FREE food delivery + book. Read my post on Wednesday! For many years, IBS was t...hought of a condition that stressed out people got. But we now know it's a real medical condition with a wide range of GI symptoms. I’ve been seeing this more and more in my private practice. The symptoms can range from annoying to debilitating. There is no one single proven treatment for IBS. But the good news is that a #LowFODMAP diet has been shown to play a major role in alleviating symptoms in ~70% of people. -->What foods can worsen symptoms of IBS? Foods high in fermentable carbs called FODMAPS can be the culprit. #FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. These are specific types of short-chain carbohydrates that can be poorly absorbed in the small intestines leading to the symptoms mentioned previously. And most of these foods are the healthy foods we’ve been told to eat for health. -->And even if you don’t technically have IBS... You may get gas, bloating or a change in bowel patterns from eating foods high in FODMAPs. So the next time you find yourself with a sudden case of gas, bloating or the urge to run to the restroom, try to remember what you ate in the hours before. -->Did you ever eat an energy bar and then feel like your gas could sail a hot air balloon? The foods I listed above are sneaky foods that can cause gas or bloating if you have IBS and even if you don’t. Are there any healthy foods that wreak havoc for you? For me, it can be certain energy bars.

There has been some confusion in the media lately. Years ago, they were "bad". Then experts reviewed the research in preparation for the new Dietary Guidelines and they were taken on the "bad" list when it came to cholesterol/heart disease. But just recently it was in the news again that eggs may increase risk of heart disease. What gives?? Here is an article that helps explain how the most recent study was flawed.
