Information from the Superintendent. Dear Lackawanna Families: On December 4, 2020, Governor Cuomo announced new school testing guidelines for schools to return to in-person instruction in Orange and Red Zones. We have applied to the New York State Department of Health for our Limited Service Laboratory license and we are in the process of securing the physical tests. The required testing for students and staff for Covid-19 is as follows:... Testing will be done ongoing for staff/faculty/students in Orange and Red Zones. Orange Zone testing needs to be 20% of in-person staff/faculty/students over a month while providing in-person instruction. Red Zone testing needs to be 30% of in-person staff/faculty/students over a month while providing in-person instruction. In my November correspondence to you, I identified a return date for in-person/hybrid instruction for January 4, 2021. Please be advised that this date has been changed to January 19, 2021 to begin in-person hybrid instruction and our required Covid-19 testing. As you are aware, consent is needed for testing for your child or children while they are attending in-person orhybrid instruction. If your child/children are fully remote, we are asking you to complete this form as well. Please go to the district website alert and click on the December 16 Letter to Families link. In the letter, please click on the link to complete the consent form in a timely fashion. Also, please be aware that if you have more than one child, multiple consent forms will need to be completed (one form for each child). A video/test demonstration can be viewed on this link as well. The swab for the Covid-19 test is only inserted into the opening of the nose as opposed to the much more evasive test into the pharynx. A trained medical professional will administer these tests. Any positive results will be reported immediately to the Erie County Department of Health and to the parent or guardian. All health data is maintained in compliance with privacy laws. When we have positive tests, the Erie County Department of Health will continue to be the lead on contact tracing and notification. The District will continue to support their efforts. We realize that parents or guardians have many questions about how the testing process is going to work. In the December 16 Letter to Families district website link there is also a Frequently Asked Question document to answer many of the most common questions. In closing, we believe it is best for students to learn in-person and we will continue to implement all of the health and safety procedures we have in place. Please complete and submit the consent form as soon as possible. Again, our first day back to in-person/hybrid instruction will be January 19, 2021. Sincerely, Keith E. Lewis
