My friend Russell taught me how every good story has two journeys... a Journey of Accomplishment and a Journey of Transformation. As marketers, we typically focus on the accomplishment that people want the big house, the nice car, or whatever thing they want to get. But in stories, the emotion is not created by the desire, it’s created by the conflict.... Without conflict, nobody would care about the story. If I just told you that I woke and drove to my office and arrived without any issue there’s no interest in that. You see, what makes stories interesting is actually not the desired destination. The visible desire merely sets the stage. Like when Frodo leaves the Shire to go destroy the ring. This is the Journey of Accomplishment. But there’s a second journey that takes place within the first journey. Frodo has got to grow up become a man. As we experience all this conflict along the way we are experiencing Frodo’s Journey of Transformation. When the hero starts out on his Journey of Accomplishment we learn about the character’s identity and what he believes about himself. Then in the process of going on the journey their old beliefs fall away and new beliefs are born. We break away from the old identity and get to the essence of who they actually are. In most good stories the hero will accomplish what he set out to do but then it usually doesn’t matter. What mattered was that character transformed into something greater. Ultimately, this is the journey you are on as a business owner and it's the journey your customers are on as they seek to improve their life with your product. I've been doing internet marketing for about 4 years. I've spent a lot of $$$$ on trainings, programs and books.
