Join us on Thursday at 7:00 for a virtual tour of the Audubon Mural Project in NYC! Details and registration on our website events page at piermontlibrary.org The Audubon Mural Project, sponsored in part by the National Audubon Society, is an impressive effort to create murals of over 300 North American birds. Most of the murals are in the Harlem neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights, where John James Audubon lived the last ten years of his life. All of t...he birds painted are threatened by climate change. So the Project is designed not only to display the birds’ beauty, but also to make us aware of the challenges that they face. The artworks range from lovely panels that fill in a former window to spectacular murals covering the entire side of a building. We will see over 40 murals, plus Audubon’s grave site, in a 50-minute slide presentation with live commentary. There will be time afterwards for Q&A. Leigh Hallingby is a licensed New York City tour guide who specializes in Harlem, Morningside Heights, and the Upper West Side. She is passionate about exploring all five NYC boroughs and beyond on foot, mostly through organized walking tours. Leigh is retired from a 36-year career as a non-profit librarian. She loves doing research about the neighborhoods in which she gives tours and sharing the information about them with attendees. Leigh is a feminist, collector, genealogist, and lover of arts, culture, and travel. After residing in the suburbs of NYC for many years, she now loves living on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

What could be better to brighten a gloomy day than these beautiful cherry blossom paintings from our latest Adult Create and Sip Class?! We looked at the theme of cherry blossoms in Japanese art and later art that engages with this theme from the Impressionists to contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst. Thank you to everyone who emailed us a pic of your finished piece! They are so beautiful!

Our May Virtual Art Show of the month is up on our website! Click here to see the beautiful art of Piermont resident John VandenOever https://www.piermontlibrary.org/artist-of-the-month/ John VandenOever came to Piermont in 1988 to be pastor of Piermont Reformed Church on Ferdon Avenue. Piermonters have long known him as a kind of Renaissance person, performing original music at area venues with his band Who Are They, and exhibiting his art at area galleries and periodicall...y at our library. His last library show, Art Is Fun, featured whimsical assemblages and multimedia works along with 2-D works. He studied drawing and painting at the renowned program at Queens College/CUNY. In addition to this virtual exhibit, John currently has paintings and photographs on view at the Clarksville Art Gallery in West Nyack, and in the members and friends exhibit at Piermont Reformed. About this exhibit: I welcome the opportunity to show my recent work virtually for many reasons. No transporting large paintings, no scrounging for frames, no schedule constraints for visitors! More importantly, the virtual format allows me to share short video projects, and photographs that might not have the technical specs for large prints but which I think are worth seeing. Also in this show are large and small paintings done in my summer garage studio, and colored pencil drawings made through the pandemic year. The common thread is translating the beauty that’s all around us, all the time.

Our February Virtual Art Show of the Month is up on our website! Click on the Artist of the Month tab at piermontlibrary.org for Love Rush Virtual Art Exhibition by Lisa D’Amico. You might just find the perfect Valentine's Day gift for that special someone! A percentage of each purchase supports the Piermont Library. What is love and how to translate it through the end of my paintbrush? Love is my never-ending art theme and I embrace it with the passion of a first kiss. Ar...t is the voice of love when words fail and it allows me to find a way to describe those unexplainable feelings at the depths of our souls. I am always seeking to discover its definition through color and creativity. My focus strives to reproduce the diverse aspects of affection and passion through my deep fascination with color, and composition and the struggles that occur between them. My creative process usually begins with a series of sketches, which serve as my inspirational catalyst to canvas, paper or wood. The techniques for the actual artwork often involve building up areas of color through the application of many layers of paint, resin, compounds and ink to achieve vibrant color effects and multitudes of texture. Dive into the heart of my artwork and find the ones that says I love you to your one true love. Join for an Art Talk with Janet Mandel! Details and registration on our website events page at piermontlibrary.org One of New York’s most unconventional painters, Florine Stettheimer was a keen and opinionated observer of the people and rapidly changing world around her. Her famous salon, attended by New York’s avant-garde during the 1920s through the early ’40s, was legendary. She prophetically chose to portray subjects considered controversial even today, such as race, sexual orientation, gender, and religion. Come and hear about the unique life of this German-Jewish artist and see some of her most celebrated works. It is time to recognize Florine Stettheimer as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, whose work remains as modern and relevant today as it was a century ago.

Earlier in December we learned about Alexander Calder in our STEAM themed art class series for kids as Calder employs a lot of math and engineering in his creations.
