In honor of Pride and Juneteenth we celebrate two African descendant luminaries who paved a way for all of us: James Baldwin and Audre Lourde. James Baldwin, Brother, novelist, playwright, essayist, poet and activist was a Proud Black Gay man. Through his brilliant writing and oratory, Baldwin always tried to move minds in the direction of equality, where racial, sexual and class distinctions could not only be seen but felt. Brother Baldwin was 45 years old when on June 28th,... 1969 Stonewall erupted and started Gay Pride. But Baldwin had been writing and moving minds in the direction of Pride, for People of Color and the LGBTQ Community long before that fateful day. In remembering James Baldwin this Pride month, let us remember one of his quotes: Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced. Sister Audre Lorde described herself as a "Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet" who dedicated her life and her work to confronting and addressing injustices. Sister Lorde took on racism, sexism, classism, capitalism, heterosexism and homophobia. Her words express the outrage, the how dare you, the anger. This Pride Month we are honored to bring her name up as the Strong Black Lesbian she was and for the strong shoulders she has allowed us to stand upon. Here is one of her quotes to march with and celebrate this Month of Pride: Lourde says: When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.
