Fortunately, Mexico's capacity for wind and solar power generation grew dramatically after 2014. Both clean power sources can be built locally, eliminating the need for imports, and increasing price stability. Furthermore, solar energy output typically rises along with the temperature, offsetting higher demand for air conditioning. Mexico desperately needs more natural gas processing facilities. With the decline of domestic natural gas production in Mexico after 2010, many processing plants have suffered setbacks. During 2018, electrical outages repeatedly interrupted operations at the Neuvo Pemex facility. That is a significant issue because Mexico depends so heavily on natural gas for electricity, and facilities like Neuvo Pemex play such a large part in processing it. Power purchase agreements have been proliferating rapidly during the last decade. U.S. corporate renewable energy PPAs went from less than 150 MW in 2013 to over 3,000 MW by 2018.
