Everyone’s safety continues to be of upmost importance to us, therefore we will continue to be closed for in office appointments until further notice. However we know that many of you may have questions or concerns about your condition during this prolonged period of closure. In order to continue serving our patients in the current climate while observing social distancing our therapists are available to you via email to answer any questions you may have. In addition we are... also offering Telehealth visits for those patients who wish to have a virtual visit with their physical therapist. A telehealth visit is a virtual visit conducted over a video chat platform and can be used to go through exercise routines, progression or modification of a program and/or assistance with alleviating aches and pain. Your individual therapist would be able to answer questions about whether a virtual visit would be appropriate at this time. For more information please email [email protected]. Thank you and we hope to see all of you soon! See more

How often should you change your running shoes. . . Biomechanists and researchers from major sneaker brands all agree that your running shoes should last between 300-500 miles. Any longer and you run the risk of serious injury. The structure and integrity of the shoe has now been compromised and may lead to foot, ankle, knee, hip, and low back problems. .... . Aside from mileage, you should also consider the terrain you run on as well as how your foot strikes when running to determine how often you should change your running shoes. Road running will cause your shoes to wear down sooner than trail running, and similarly, a hard heel strike will wear down the stability of a shoe faster than a midfoot striker. . . As the weather starts to get nicer and you want to break in your new sneakers, remember to keep an activity log so you can keep track of your mileage. More importantly, come in for an evaluation of any aches and pains you may have as you venture out on your runs. . . #physicaltherapy #orthopedics #running #runningmotivation #runningshoes #nyc #uws #miccassphysicaltherapy #newyork #nike #adidas #brooks #aasics #hoka

What’s better for your knees, treadmill or outdoors?. . . While patellofemoral pain makes up about 25% of running injuries, it seems that there two types of runners in this world. Some runners will tell you that they prefer running on the treadmill especially when the weather isn’t favorable. Others will tell you that they would never step foot on a treadmill because it’s bad for your knees. Willy et al. studied this particular phenomenon and found that there was NO DIFFERENC...E in peak patellofemoral joint reaction forces or joint stress on the knees when on the treadmill and when running overground. HOWEVER, there was greater stress on the Achilles’ tendon when running on the treadmill as compared to overground running. So, if you’re #TeamTreadmill and have been feeling tightness in your calves or pain in your Achilles, try moving your runs to outdoors. Regardless, if you have any aches and pains, stop by ASAP! Willy et al, 2016.
