Does this email look 'Phishy'? "Click here to get your refund" "Your account is out of date"... "Here’s your invite to our new video calling service!" Phishing scams or email fraud are as old as e-mail itself. The scams are all attempts to get you to volunteer your personal information to criminals or to install malware on your computer or mobile device. Criminals attempt to fool you by sending email messages that point to fake websites. With the holidays approaching and online purchases becoming the norm, there are a lot of email scams that show their fraudulent heads more often during this time of the year. The scammers will try and convince you that your computer has a problem. It may, but they are not really there to help you, they are only there to hurt you. 1. ALWAYS CHECK TO SEE THE SENDERS EMAIL ADDRESS. Many times the fraudulent companies like to mimic email addresses of legitimate companies, but after closer examination of the email address, you will find that it is in fact, not really coming from real companies like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, etc. 2. DO NOT CLICK ON THE ATTACHMENTS. 3. DO NOT REPLY TO OR UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE EMAIL. Once you reply or unsubscribe from the email that you received, the scammer now knows that they have a 'live' email account. They will then share your email address with all their 'scammer friends', and you will receive a lot more malicious/spam email. 4. NEVER CALL THE 800 NUMBERS PROVIDED. These people are not their to help you, they just want access to your computer system. 5. NEVER LET ANYONE ACCESS YOUR COMPUTER IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THEM. Do not let these scammers have access to your computer. They can run programs in the background that can easily get all of your online usernames and passwords to all of your online accounts. This includes your bank accounts, and online shopping accounts. 6.NEVER GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION. Do not give them your credit card number for their bogus Antivirus programs; do not give them any bank account information; do not give them your Social Security number. If you are unsure on what to do. Close out of your email program, the website, or just turn your computer off. Contact a Millennium Computers Technician at 585-343-3310.
