Thank you so much The Sophie Fund for doing such an informative piece on mental health care in our region.
"Ask teenagers, 'How is this time affecting you?' Dr. Moutier said, and if they are experiencing any kind of struggle. And make it clear that no challenges are insurmountable, she said, 'those are really important words for parents to say.'.. "If you’re concerned that your child is depressed or anxious, or if an adolescent talks about feeling overwhelmed, Dr. Anthony suggested asking directly, Are you having any thoughts of suicide? You don’t need to ask them every day, but if you’re having any concerns, you should definitely ask." There are other helpful examples of how to help your teen in this article. Mental health treatment is available and can work.
The last eleven months have been hard on so many of us. Mothers, we see you, and we are here for you.
We are honoring Black History Month at MindWell by learning more about Black History of Psychology. Drs. Kenneth and Mamie Clark are two psychologist we all need to know. Kenneth and Mamie Clark are known for their work on The Coloring Test and The Doll Experiments, both of which are important works in our understanding of the formation of racial identity. Kenneth Clark, Ph.D. testified about these studies in Brown v. Board, which was considered influential in the decision. Both Drs. Clark were active in the Civil Rights Movement and were the first two African-Americans to receive Ph.D.s in psychology from Columbia University. Kenneth was the first Black president of the APA. Thank you Dr. Kenneth CLark and Dr. Mamie Clark for your work.
We are offering two parenting groups starting in March, open to caregivers of anxious youth age 6-16 and caregivers of strong-willed children age 2-6, residing in New York State. The groups will run virtually. For more information, please see our website.
