Looking for some interesting reading this weekend? Check out the 2021 edition of "Work in Progress," the publication of the high school's Literary Magazine Club, now in its fourth year, and under the guidance of advisor Karen Hooper! Everything is student written, drawn, or photographed! Kudos to all for their involvement in, or contributions to, this outstanding representation of student talent and creativity! https://pub.lucidpress.com/676793f6-f207-441e-9017-270b53/
How would you portray yourself abstractly? These MVES students clearly know! Take a look as they work creatively on their abstract portraits!
Last night, June 10, students from the Otisville Concert Band, directed by Maria Fenfert, and the Otisville Choirs, under the direction of Skyler Klein, performed a wonderful outdoor concert entitled, The Phoenix, for friends and family! The concert was a celebration of joy, rebirth, strength, and solidarity in the face of adversity and featured pieces that reflected that theme. The concert concluded with "Ode To Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony which was a tribute to the composer's 250th birthday as well as a way to commemorate an incredible musician who himself overcame his loss of hearing to write one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Watch for videos, so you call can hear how great they sound!

You can’t "taste" a book by its cover! In collaboration with Middle School Librarian Maggie Spicehandler, a "Virtual Book Tasting" was held for some students in Brooke Larson's and Jaclyn Lockett's ELA sixth-grade ELA class during this week of all-remote instruction at the middle school. As part of their "tasting," the students looked at different video clips, author interviews or book reviews on novels within a specific sub-genre. ... Some of these sub-genres included adventure, mystery, historical fiction, science fiction and more. Through these tastings, students were able to get a feel for what that each novel would entail within each sub-genre. At the tasting’s conclusion, almost all students had selected a novel they wanted to borrow from the library!

Ever wish you had a twin to do your work while you have fun? (Or, in some cases, more than one more person?) Kat Hoolan’s High School Studio in Photography students figured out the secret to just that with this Seeing Double project. And, no, we’re NOT going to tell you how they did it! Take a look and be impressed!
Congratulations to Sebastian Quiles, the randomly selected winner of High School Yearbook Adviser Kat Hoolan’s CALL FOR YEARBOOK PHOTOS request! Check out his Minisink GOLF SWAG! He gets a $20 Cugino’s gift card to enjoy some delicious food! (MAYBE... he’ll share with his family!!!). THANK YOU to everyone for the many fun and creative entries received!
A race to the finish is really a seventh-grade science lesson in the importance of observation! Amy Sicina’s seventh-grade Life Science students recently set up obstacle courses in trays to observe brown, worm-like larvae of darkling beetles known as mealworms navigating and negotiating the course. Mealworms can be found throughout most of the world and prefer warm, dark, and damp places like under decaying logs and leaves. They are designed for burrowing and eating and wil...l feast upon grains, vegetation, spoiled food and many other types of fresh or decaying organic matter. They’re an important part of the ecosystem and an important food source for many animals. It didn’t matter which mealworm had enough zeal to finish, because the goal was to observe and describe their characteristics and behaviors. Observation is essential in science! Scientists use observation to collect and record data, which enables them to construct and then test hypotheses and theories. Descriptive observations play a vital role in scientific progress, particularly during the initial explorations made possible by technological breakthroughs.
