#livingwithart Every Sunday we highlight one artwork we love living with. Today we feature this finely-woven Chancay textile from Peru (c. 1300-1450 CE), which features repeating abstract bird and geometric motif patterns. Produced from camelid (llama/alpaca) and cotton fiber, the deep red color used to dye the wool was likely produced from cochineal, a red scale insect, while the golden yellow color was derived from a plant dye. In pre-contact Peruvian cultures, textiles wer...e considered more valuable than precious metals like gold or silver. The Chancay culture developed between the valleys of Fortaleza, Pativilca, Supe, Huaura, Chancay, Chillón, Rimac, and Lurín, on the central coast of Peru from approximately 1000-1470 CE. Renowned for their imaginative textiles, the Chancay culture was later absorbed into the Inca empire. Artworks like this one are on display at The Met, American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Museum, and National Museum of the American Indian here in NYC. Definitely pay these great museums a visit to see more Chancay textiles! Artwork: Textile, Chancay culture, Peru, c. 1300-1450 CE, Camelid and cotton fiber, natural dyes, 11.5 inches high x 14 inches wide, 17.25 x 19.25 inches framed. #artcollection #artcollecting #artcollector #artcollectors #artadvisor #artadvisory #artconsulting #artconsultant @artlifebyrossana @chezdeleget #chancay #chancayculture #chancaytextile #textile #textiles #weaving #precolumbiantextiles #cochineal See more
