It is amazing how the visual style and iconography of ukiyo-e continues to resonate across a variety of fields, including fashion and sports. In his series, "Edo Ball," a Melbourne-based artist reconfigures basketball jerseys with the sport's biggest stars captured as Japanese woodblock prints, including "Shogun [LeBron] James" and "Dennis Ronin." The Art Institute of Chicago is holding virtual studios focusing on artists in their collection across a range of media. The upcoming Virtual Studio on June 4 titled, "Making Something From Nothing" will focus on gallery artist Mishima Kimiyo and her use of newspaper and printed materials. Examined alongside the artwork of Kurt Schwitters, Mishima's collages are the inspiration for this interactive museum event. I made collages to express the fear and anxiety of being buried in information. -- Mishima Kimiyo The virtual event is free with registration. Weekend read and video In conjunction with their exhibition NATURE/ SUPERNATURE, Japan House Los Angeles hosted a webinar to examine the question: Why were there so many images of supernatural beings in Japanese prints of the 19th century? Why were they so popular, and what can they tell us today about Japanese culture and beliefs? Professor Ryo Akama from Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto and curator Hollis Goodall from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art explore these questi...ons in a fascinating conversation. The latest NHK World documentary feature on "The Lost Textile of Ryukyu" follows longtime friend of the gallery Reiko Sud. She travels to Okinawa, historically a flourishing center of beautifully dyed and woven textiles, to explore their rather mysterious textile tradition called ton-byan. As she searches for traces of this craft, she uncovers the history of the lost kingdom and wishes for peace at the core of Ryukyu textiles. A pioneer in the global fiber-art movement, Rei...ko Sud is a tireless inventor, engaged in a constant search for new treatments that produce beautiful and striking effects. Joan B Mirviss LTD has held three trunk shows of her spectacular creations, each a huge success, to bring her unique and original designs to New York. To view the full documentary: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/video/3004681/ This will also air on NHK World Japan on November 13, 2020 at 10:00am UTC

Daniella on Design visited our exhibition "Fathers & Sons" for an interview with Joan Mirviss, a tour of beautiful ceramics, and a cup of sencha. View the full video below: "Contemporary Japanese ceramics stand at the top of artistic imagination, traditionally seen as the ultimate expression of Japanese spirit, art, and daily life. Over the past two decades, a new generation of ceramicists have redefined and reshaped clay art, formulating their own personal imaginative statements, and taking ceramics to new horizons. It has become a specialized area of collecting, which attracts passionate and dedicated collectors fascinated with the ambitious achievements in the clay medium." -- THE COLLECTOR, from Daniella on Design

ONLINE EVENT The Allure of Japanese Contemporary Ceramics An Artists' Conversation Thursday November 5th at 5pm EST In conjunction with our new exhibition, SEEN | UNSEEN... https://www.mirviss.com/exhibitions/seen-unseen Our latest online Zoom event unites some of the most important artists in Japan today. They are joined by New York-based ceramic artist Jeff Shapiro for an unmissable conversation among groundbreaking artists in clay. Based on an exclusive launch event in Tokyo for 'The Allure of Japanese Contemporary Ceramics' last year, we now open up that conversation with a new panel of artists and to share with a wider audience online. Singled out for their pioneering work, each artist has masterfully balanced tradition and innovation. As their longtime dealer, Joan B. Mirviss brings together these leading lights of contemporary clay for a very special conversation, which she will also moderate. Contact us at [email protected] for a link to the Zoom event. ____ Akiyama Y is Japan's most distinguished clay sculptor and has been widely celebrated over the years for his groundbreaking work. He has received some of Japan's most prestigious grand prizes. Kitamura Junko was featured in seminal American exhibitions focused on Japanese ceramics, which travelled to thirteen museums worldwide. Along with her husband Akiyama Y, she is currently exhibiting at our highly-anticipated gallery show. Kond Takahiro was born into a renowned ceramics family in Kyoto but has quickly distinguished himself with bold new techniques and forms. His works are in prestigious international museum collections. Nakamura Takuo, born Kanazawa, works in a modern synthesis of various styles and has made tradition new again in surprising and very personal ways. He has exhibited in and is widely collected in many countries. Jeff Shapiro, a ceramic artist based in upstate New York, studied Bizen ceramics with a Living National Treasure while living in Japan for nine years. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has given workshops and seminars around the world.

In their own words, internationally acclaimed artists Akiyama Y and Kitamura Junko present their latest exhibition at Joan B Mirviss LTD, SEEN | UNSEEN. As different as they may initially appear, similar ideas about the possibilities of clay inform the artworks of this Kyoto-based artistic couple. Greatly inspired by their teachers who co-founded the Sdeisha ceramic movement, both artists are known for conceptually daring works that shake loose traditional ties to functionality. Akiyama and Kitamura explore the very essence of clay in their latest works created for their second joint exhibition at Joan B Mirviss. A new book by an itinerant photographer showcases the range and depth of traditional crafts across Japan. His curiosity first piqued by an editorial assignment to a kimono dyer, Australian photographer Irwin Wong embarked on a three-year journey from Kyushu to Hokkaido cataloguing artisans in their studios. "Handmade in Japan" details the history, geographical insights, context, and modern applications of such crafts as washi papermaking, katana swordsmithing, onishi roof tile carving, sumac berry wax candlemaking, and Tokyo-style kitemaking.
