Most people have heard of trigger points, but don't really know or understand what they are. This is a great visual explaining them. Our muscles are made up of many small fibers, when these fibers contract they create adhesions or "knots", which restrict blood and oxygen from getting to the muscles. Many athletes (and people who sit at a desk all day) will eventually get some type of piriformis pain. Many times it's tight from overuse or sitting for long periods, this technique can help release that muscle, especially since sometimes stretching alone won't do the trick. Follow the instructions below and feel free to let me know how it worked for you! PAIN IN THE BUTT! ~ Piriformis . Piriformis Stretch and Self-massage . Find a spikey ball, hockey ball, ...tennis ball, trigger point ball, foam roller (you name it!) Place the ball underneath your glute region on the side of your tight/sore piriformis. Place your foot over your opposite knee to create a figure-4 almost. This will create a stretch in your gluteal region. Roll the spikey ball (or whatever ball you are using) around your gluteal region, pausing in any areas of increased tenderness. Once the tenderness starts to decrease you can move onto another spot. . You can do this for up to a minute. I sometimes do this 2 or 3 times a day post hockey! More often than not, I have clients who come in after seeing this doctor or that doctor, getting shots, going to PT and usually (but not always) all they need is a good targeted massage. This stretch is great and if you add some heat before hand, it's even better! Do you sit all day, or perform vigorous exercise? The piriformis is a difficult to reach muscle that runs from your sacrum to your thigh bone. When it begins to push against your sciatic nerve, often d...ue to too much sitting, it can cause excruciating pain. Check out the instructions below. Lie on your back on a padded surface. Begin with your legs straight in front of you. Bend the left leg up and place the left foot on the ground near your butt. Bend the right leg up and rest the right ankle across the left knee. Reach your hands around your left shin or left thigh and pull it towards your chest. Your right hand will go through the hole in between your legs. Pull and hold the left leg, feeling the stretch in the right hip flexor.
