Morgan Duke Conservation Society 09.07.2021

Statement On June 7, 2021, Morgan Duke Conservation Society was attacked on a Facebook group page after several people posted comments regarding the James Sullivan Steward of Hudson River Recreation Area Petition. This petition urges the NYSDEC to hire one more forest ranger for Hudson River Recreation Area. Some of the comments said that the Morgan Duke Conservation Society is a fictitious organization and called out how taxpayer dollars are being spent. Another person qu...estioned why 15 volunteers, a steward and one ranger were needed in this small area. In response, Morgan Duke Conservation Society would like to address few things. First, we have nothing to do with the James Sullivan Petition. Anything that James Sullivan does with the petition is his own thing. Secondly, Morgan Duke Conservation Society is not a law enforcement organization. We have no authority to give tickets or arrest anyone who breaks the law. Furthermore, the Morgan Duke Conservation Society’s Southeastern Adirondack Office works at Hudson River Recreation Area. The Morgan Duke Conservation Society steward and the volunteers from the organization are there to help protect the area’s natural resources and educate the public. Likewise, steward, James Sullivan, and the 15+ volunteers assigned to the area help oversee the trail and location conditions, addressing concerns as they arise. However, these volunteers don’t all come to work at the Hudson River Recreation Area on the same day. These people volunteer on their own time, often when they camp, tube down the river or hike. While they do these activities, they may lend a hand by helping to pick up litter. Additionally, James Sullivan hosts public cleanup events, where the community can come and help pick up garbage throughout the area. Morgan Duke Conservation Society also works at other locations throughout New York State, including Bashakill Wildlife Management Area, Vernooy Kill State Forest, Colgate Lake Wild Forest and Bear Mountain State Park, as well as at Sam’s Point. We have more than 77 volunteers in the organization. At 5,550 acres long, Hudson River Recreation Area spans a large region. It goes from River Road all the way up to the other side of Warrensburg on Golf Course Road. The more volunteers Hudson River Recreation Area has, the more the area will be kept clean. - Morgan Duke Conservation Society

NYS DEC has decided that Morgan Duke Conservation Society will no longer be at Peekamoose Blue Hole. For five years we have partnered with Catskill Center and New York-New Jersey Trail Conference for helping protect this amazing place called the Blue Hole. We have met so many wonderful people. We will continue working at Vernooy Kill State Forest and Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

We are the Morgan Duke Conservation Society. We were founded by James Sullivan, who saw what humans left behind while camping in the Hudson River Special Management Area known as Buttermilk as well as the Hudson River Recreation Area located in the Adirondacks Mountains. And what he saw troubled him. He saw trash, litter, and debris. He saw vandalism on the rocks. He saw vegetation trampled....Continue reading
