Resurrection can only happen when there is a complete death. Our wise pastor wrote this line last weekend, and I have not yet recovered from the vexing truth ...of his words. What in my life do I need to let dieso that God can raise up something new? Nearly every one of my plans for 2020, for starters. A desire for control. Every former version of work and school for our family. Other people’s dreams that I mistook for my own. The yelping lunge of the ego. False beliefs and unjust systems. Relationships that can no longer bear the weight of now. What I thought I wanted. None of them have died completely. Because I didn’t want to let them go. I didn’t release them into resurrection. The possibility that God’s version of the end might not be mine. Resurrection only works in one direction: up. Toward light and love and life. Too often I want to tug God down to earth, but the Spirit wants to soarand shift and transform what has been. Here’s what I’m hearing now, unsettling but true (and maybe you are catching whispers of the same): the call to let go but stay faithful, knowing that what-will-be is on the way. That truth is a mighty witness, trust and hope. One I don’t want to miss.
