The vagus nerve is especially important to smooth out nervous system function. It works to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the rest and digest part of the nervous system which acts like a brake to balance the sympathetic, or fight or flight part of the nervous system. It has been found to help modulate communication between the brain and gastrointestinal tract (the brain-gut axis) and regulates internal organ functions like heart rate, respiration, and di...gestion. Studies have shown that acupuncture can help activate the vagus nerve to balance the nervous system and alleviate numerous physical symptoms of stress and anxiety. Achilles Tendonitis is a common runnning and sports injury. It is inflammation of the achilles tendon which is caused by the straining or tearing of the tendon fibers. It is often caused by muscle tightness in the gastrocnemius, soleus, and plantaris muscles which attach to the achilles tendon. The tibialis posterior muscle can also refer pain into the achilles area. Releasing the muscle tightness in muscles around the achilles tendon helps them stop pulling on it which is wh...at causes inflammation and pain. More and more professional athletes in all sports are discovering the many benefits of acupuncture. It offers a natural, non-drug alternative to relieving pain, and provides lasting relief by addressing the underlying causes of pain and discomfort. #morningsideacupuncture #acupuncturenyc #mobility #chronicpain #jointpain #legpain #musclepain #nervepain #footpain #anklepain #physicaltherapy #achillestendon #plantarfasciitis #marathon #runner #sportsmedicine #alternativehealth #holistichealth #physicaltherapynyc

Releasing tension in the neck, upper back, and shoulders using trigger point release style acupuncture. We target tight bands of muscle that tighten to become hyperirritable spots that can create referral patterns of pain elsewhere in the body. This generally happens because when a muscle tightens, it shortens, and pulls on the structures it attaches to which can lead to pain and inflammation at those sites. If you have chronic muscle tightness in your neck, shoulders, upp...er back, or low back (or anywhere else in the body), this style of acupuncture can be especially effective and provide lasting pain relief. Our most recent blog post is about Acupuncture for Gluteus Medius Trigger Points. This muscle comes up in many cases of low back pain and is a common area of tightness due to our sedentary lifestyles. Weakness or tightness in this area can lead to overuse of other muscles which can lead to pain or injuries. It is the first article in a series of posts about the most common areas of muscle tightness and how acupuncture can help release those muscles and reduce pain. Lack of m...ovement is a big contributor to chronic pain and muscle tightness. Our bodies require movement to exercise our muscles, promote blood flow, and release endorphins. When our movement is limited, our muscles tighten up and get stuck in whatever posture we maintain them in for long periods of time. This leads to stiffness, reduced range of motion, and eventually pain. https://www.morningsideacupuncturenyc.com//acupuncture-for

Our new blog post is about ways to minimize pain while working from home. Over the past few months we have seen many new cases of neck, shoulder, back, and hip pain related to sub-optimal work-from-home conditions. Here are a few tips: 1) Proper Workspace Setup: Make sure your monitor is directly in front of you, your feet are on the ground, and the your workspace is the appropriate height.... Tilting your head, even slightly, for many hours can result in muscle tightness in the neck and shoulders. 2) Take breaks and move around: Our bodies weren’t designed to sit still all day. Trigger points and muscle tightness commonly occur from lack of movement and being in one position for long periods of time. Set a time every hour or two and move your body around. Try gentle forms of gentle exercise like Qi Gong, Tai Chi, or Yoga. 3) Don't sit or stand all day: Both sitting for long period of time and standing for long periods of time are bad for you. Low back pain is commonly associated with both sitting and standing for long periods of time. If you have a flexible workspace you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. 4) Wear a headset: A headset makes it easy to remain in a relaxed posture while handling work calls and is an easy way to prevent neck and shoulder pain. 5) Find balance: Stress can contribute to muscle tightness. Find ways to balance the stresses of working from home. It is easy for your home to become enmeshed with your work. Set boundaries for yourself and don't feel like you need to be working every second that you're at home.

Living through a traumatic event can leave lasting effects on our mental and physical well-being. That’s because experiencing traumatic events affects our nervous system and our perception of the world. This can lead to predicable physical symptoms along with residual feelings of anxiety, anger, fear, and depression. Acupuncture has been shown to relieve the physical symptoms of stress as well as calm down an overactive nervous system to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. https://www.morningsideacupuncturenyc.com//acupuncture-for

Andie is currently offering virtual stand-alone herbal medicine consults. She has studied with master herbalists Sharon Weizenbaum and Dr. Yu Guo-Jun. Her goal is to design custom formulas that are unique to one's constitution and condition, in order to bring the body back to balance. Chinese herbs have been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of symptoms including headaches, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, cough, nasal congestion, anxiety, fatigue, ...difficulty sleeping, menstrual cramps, and pain. Chinese herbs can be used as a stand-alone treatment or along with acupuncture treatments to provide enhanced benefits. There are over 300 commonly used herbs in the Chinese materia medica, and hundreds more that are less commonly used. The effects of Chinese herbs on various health ailments have been observed for thousands of years and the result is a highly sophisticated system of classification and formula composition.

Palpation is a skill that not all acupuncturists have. We use it to identify tight bands of muscle that can cause pain and trigger point referral patterns. It provides valuable information about where people are holding tension in their bodies and about what other areas may be compensating. Releasing these areas helps reduce pain, restore function, and relieve tension which is often a main goal of treatment.

I am excited to announce that my dear friend and amazing acupuncturist and herbalist Andie Xu is joining Morningside Acupuncture in the Washington Heights office. She practices an integrated style of acupuncture utilizing her extensive training and unique background with three different styles of acupuncture. She enjoys providing care for people from diverse age groups, cultural backgrounds, gender identifications and orientations. With her additional herbal training in women’s health and digestive issues, she understands how to incorporate herbal medicine and acupuncture to help restore balance in one’s body to promote healing. Her stated mission as a practitioner is to relieve a patient’s pain and suffering, as well as to help a person connect with their deepest nature, thereby supporting individual growth. Waterlemon (Xi Gua) is a great summer treat. It's also used in Chinese medicine to relieve summer-heat and intense thirst, unblock urination, and generate fluids. Combining watermelon with mint makes for a cooling and refreshing summer drink to prevent dehydration and combat the draining effects of too much sun. Mint (Bo He) helps disperse heat, cools and clears the eyes and head, and soothes the throat. It can also help vent early stage rashes and relieve gastric disturbance.

I recently did an interview with Business Talk Radio. Here are a few excerpts that highlight my acupuncture practice and my background: I specialize in treating pain, sports injuries, and stress related disorders. My acupuncture practice combines several styles of acupuncture with electroacupuncture, Chinese herbs, cupping, gua sha, and qi gong exercises.... I primarily use acupuncture in my treatments, utilizing a trigger point or dry needling style of acupuncture to release myofascial constriction to relieve acute and chronic pain, and treat sports injuries. At a deeper level I use traditional acupuncture points with a focus on calming the nervous system to restore the balance between the mind and body. My work with patients is usually focused on releasing the tight fibers in soft tissue to reduce pain and promote normal functioning of the affected area. My main goal for people is to allow them to get back to doing the things they love as quickly as possible without pain. I also treat many physical symptoms of stress and anxiety which arise from the way our nervous system is affected by stressful or traumatic events. These symptoms can include things like muscle tightness, chronic pain, fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, sleep issues, and menstrual irregularities. Prior to becoming an acupuncturist, I worked in finance for almost 10 years and decided to pursue a different career after my own experiences with acupuncture and Chinese medicine. I am also an avid soccer player and have been playing for over 30 years. My practice combines many of my life experiences as an athlete and working in a high stress environment.
