The Universal Marble Corp. and the Snowflake Quarry existed in Thornwood for over 100 years. The quarry was filled in and the Thornwood Town Center was constructed in the 1980's. See the link below for more. https://www.nytimes.com//there-was-a-hole-then-it-was-gone

Throw Back Thursday *** Prior to 1940, traffic entering Hawthorne from Route 9A had to use Broadway in front of the Dutch Reform Church and an at grade railroad crossing just north of the Train Station Parking Lot. Shown in these photos is the crossing guards hut at the end of Broadway where the entrance to Broadway Field currently exists and the design plan for the NY 141 Bridge over the then New York Central Railroad Tracks.

Mark Donovan is a retired newspaper editor (Durham, NC) originally from Irvington and a Duke University graduate with a degree in History. He contacted the Mt Pleasant Historical Society looking for information on the Butler Estate in Eastview. He has been writing posts about Gilded Age Estates in Irvington, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, some which overlap unincorporated areas of Mt Pleasant.
