Patients often reveal key information about their health right as the physician is leaving the room (called hand-on-door syndrome). In a busy practice, some providers may choose to extend the visit whereas others may request to address these concerns at a later time. One of our dermatologists, Dr. Sheryl Miller, highlights the importance of taking the time to address patient's end-of-visit comments in order to improve patient care: "Addressing those hand-on-the-door concerns may not only increase patient satisfaction but may uncover pathology to life-altering diseases."

Many patients with skin of color think that they are not at risk for skin cancers. Although it is true that individuals with skin of color are at lower risk, skin cancers do occur and are generally more aggressive and associated with higher mortality in skin of color patients than in white patients. Check out Dr. Kaufman and Dr. Alexis' recent article in Cutis for more information.
