Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department 12.12.2020

As Christmas is fast approaching, we often get busy and tend to forget to keep our Christmas trees properly watered. This is a video that shows the difference between a fire in a watered tree and a dry tree. Any heat source, spark or open flame can cause a Christmas tree to catch on fire, but regular watering could make the difference between minor and major damage to your home. The video starts with a fire that is started in the watered tree and shows very slow fire progression. The fire in the dry tree is started approximately 30 seconds after the fire in the watered tree. Please watch and check out the result! #ChristmasSafety #waterthattree

*** INFORMATION RELEASE *** Tomorrow, September 11th, 2020, The Mt. Kisco Fire Department will be hosting an all day memorial at the 9/11 monument located at the north side of the village library. From 8am until 6pm we ask the public to visit the monument for remembrance and reflection. From times stated above, there will be a member of the fire department handing out flowers to be placed around the monument. At 6pm, there will be a service limited to fire department members... and enough seating for 50 people, all others attending will be asked to practice social distancing. If you would like to attend please be sure to wear a mask. Tomorrow the fire department will also be activating our decommissioned mechanical siren, which used to alert us to emergencies. The siren will sound four times throughout the morning signifying each time a hijacked plane was crashed. The times the siren will sound on 9/11 are as follows: - 8:46am (American Airlines Flight 11 hit the WTC) - 9:03am (United Airlines Flight 175 hit the WTC) - 9:37am (American Airlines Flight 77 hit the pentagon) - 10:03am (United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania) We understand that this may cause a disturbance but we pledged as a nation 19 years ago that we would NEVER FORGET and due to COVID-19 restrictions we cannot host our normal ceremony. The Mount Kisco Fire Department hopes that when the community hears the four sirens tomorrow, that we all can take that minute to pause and reflect on the tragedy of the lives lost during the attacks, but also the strength and unity of our community and nation in the days that followed. The attacks of September 11th were intended to break our spirit. Instead we have emerged stronger and more unified. We feel renewed devotion to the principles of political, economic and religious freedom, the rule of law and respect for human life. We are more determined than ever to live our lives in freedom. Then-NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani

***INCIDENT ALERT*** On September 9th, 2020 just before 1230hrs, the MKFD was dispatched on a rescue assignment for a vehicle that drove through a house and down an embankment with occupants trapped. Upon arrival units confirmed that the vehicle had driven through the back wall of a garage then down a hill and off a 15 foot wall coming to rest on the roadway below. @mountkiscoems and @westchesterems treated and transported 2 patients to the hospital. The MKFD made sure the vehicle was secure and managed a fluid spill from the vehicle. Firefighters along with the building department assessed the house to ensure structural integrity. *** Siren Test *** Today between 3:30pm and 4:30pm, the old mechanical siren located at W. Main St. and Croton Ave. will be tested, lasting about 1 minute. This siren was formally used to notify the fire department of an emergency and is very loud. The siren was decommissioned a couple decades ago as neighbors found it to be a disturbance. The reason for this test, is that tomorrow, September 11th, 2020 the siren will be used to mark remembrance of the attacks on our natio...n 19 years ago. There is no reason for alarm... this is a TEST only! For any questions please feel free to message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected]

**Storm Update** The Mount Kisco Fire Department hopes all residents of the Village made it through yesterday’s storm safe and sound. Much of the Village is without power and there are many trees and wires down still in the street. Please treat all downed wires as live power wires, keep your distance at all times. If you are running a standby generator, please be cautious refueling them. Spilling fuel on a hot engine can cause a fire. Finally, do not run a standby generator inside of a building and make sure you are away from doors and windows. If not, you run the risk of filling your residence with toxic fumes. Thank you and stay safe.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Freddie Lena, 62 year member, ex-president and ex-captain of the Mt. Kisco Mutual Engine & Hose Co. #1. For his career, Freddie served the residents of Yorktown as a police officer and sergeant for 25 years. Not only did he serve his community, he served his nation in the army during the Korean War. Freddie was not just a community man, but a proud family man...married to his loving wife Joan for nearly 65 years, father to two daughters and grandfather to three, all of which he described as his pride and joy! The loss of Freddie has severed yet another link within our department...may he rest peacefully and watch over us as we continue to do the job he started 62 years ago.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic many events that people enjoy with friends and family have been cancelled. The Mount Kisco Fire Department felt that it was important to still celebrate these events and at the same time bring smiles to our community. Over the past few months the Mount Kisco Fire Department has performed approximately 100 personalized parades for birthdays, anniversaries, etc., on top of the already challenging tasks(especially during a pandemic)... of training, administrative work and providing the residents with normal fire protection. Now that the governor is allowing our area to start to reopen, we are announcing that the last day to have a birthday parade will be June 10th. Any requests that have ALREADY been made for after June 10th will be fulfilled but those request must have been made prior to this post. If you would like a birthday parade on or before June 10th, you can still schedule by emailing [email protected]. We understand that this news may be disappointing, but think of it this way...this is that glimmer of light, the hope that we are on our way to returning to normal life! The Mount Kisco Fire Department would like to thank our community for their continued love and support. #kiscostrong #loveourcommunity #weareinthistogether #hope

***INCIDENT ALERT*** The Mount Kisco Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a garage fire on Sarles Street just before 2:30 pm. 2283 arrived quickly and reported smoke from a detached garage. 2281 and 2282 arrived right after followed by E104. The crew from E104 quickly stretched an attack line, opened up walls and snuffed the fire out. E105 arrived and stretched a secondary attack line to the attic as well as a back up line. The truck company’s crew carried up ground ...ladders and opened up the walls to check for extension. Armonk and Banksville FD tankers assisted due to limited water supply in the area. Bedford Hills FD FasTeam was requested to the scene to help protect the firefighters that were operating. Armonk EMS responded and provided rehab services. The fire was deemed under control and units returned to service around 4:00 pm. Katonah FD relocated to Mount Kisco FD headquarters to cover calls until MKFD units could free up. Special thanks to all of our mutual aid departments @bedfordhillsfd @banksvillefire @armonkfiredept See more
