In the midst of everything we are going through, our spiritual family came together on New Year’s Day and raised over $600 to help homeless LGBTQ+ youth in NYC. Recognizing our own souls reflected back in the eyes of those who are less fortunate is the essence of yoga. Thank you to everyone who gave to our fundraiser and seeded a little more love and kindness in the world. If you would like to contribute, please go to the @new_alternatives_nyc website and make a donation there. Every little bit helps. #mylivingyoga #yoganyc #nycyoga #weloveourstudents #lgbtq #homelessyouth #ahimsa #compassion #aparigraha #charity #goodworks #mondayvibes

Here’s a bit of good COVID-19 news you may have missed: contact tracing data shows that gyms and fitness centers account for just 0.06% of new cases in New York State. That’s less than restaurants, colleges, high schools, mass transit, retail, and hair and nail salons. Recall that in September, New York City banned indoor fitness classes essentially keeping yoga studios closed out of fears that these activities were too risky. The data from elsewhere in the state, wher...e those classes did resume, show they are actually quite safe compared to other permitted activities. This gives us high confidence that the statewide safety guidelines for gyms and fitness centers which require masks at all times, social distancing, and proper ventilation, to name a few are highly effective at cutting down the risk of transmission. We were prepared to implement those same guidelines when we thought we would be able to reopen the studio in September. Whenever New York City decides to lift the ban on indoor fitness classes, we will still be ready. #covidyoga #nycyoga #yoganyc #covidsafety #mylivingyoga #weloveourstudents #yogaclass #yogaclasses #yogaeveryday #yogapractice #ahimsa #safety #harmreduction

Happy New Year! The Sanskrit word for intention is sankalpa. It is a pure, heartfelt promise; a solemn vow or commitment you make to yourself. A sankalpa is more than just a resolution, which usually involves setting a short term, ego-driven goal. A sankalpa is something that becomes apparent to you after deep reflection. It is more like a personal mission statement to make a lasting, positive change in your life. What is your sankalpa? What are your intentions and... priorities for the coming year? What do you want to focus on? Comment below and let us know. #sankalpa #intention #newyearsresolution #positivechange #happynewyear #yogapractice #yogalife #yogainspo #yogainspiration

There are many reasons to practice yoga. One of them is to reduce stress and boost the immune system. In crisis or stressful situations, our bodies naturally go into fight-or-flight mode. Muscles tense up, heart rate and blood pressure goes up, and stress hormones flood the body. Certain important functions, like immunity and digestion, are suppressed while the body prepares to either fight or run for immediate survival. This is only meant to be temporary. It’s unsustaina...ble long term. This is why people who feel chronic stress and fatigue develop ulcers and are more susceptible to getting sick. The body diverts resources away from the immune system to deal with the immediate stress. Asana, pranayama and meditation counteracts this by stimulating the body’s relaxation response. Heart rate and blood pressure level off and inflammation is reduced. The body is able to repair and rebuild itself and will be in a better position to defend against harmful viruses and bacteria. #yoga #immunehealth #stressrelief #wellness #yogaforhealth #yogalife #yogaforstressrelief #yoganyc #nycyoga #queensyoga

There are many reasons to practice yoga. One of them is the values underpinning the practice. Many people are initially drawn to yoga because of the physical and mental benefits. Eventually they come to understand some of the most transformational yoga takes place off the yoga mat. Yoga is actually built on a foundation of 10 ethical concepts that govern what yogis should and shouldn’t do. They are known as the Yamas and Niyamas.... Yogis embrace Non-violence; Truthfulness; Non-stealing; Self-Restraint; Non-hoarding; Cleanliness; Contentment; Self-Discipline; Self-Study; and Devotion to the Divine. These practices create a plain and easy to understand roadmap for how to live as an honorable human being, one who is faithful, humble and modest, and works to advance fairness, righteousness, and the common good. #mylivingyoga #yogaoffthemat #yogapractice #thursdaythoughts #wellness #yamas #niyamas #thisisyoga #yogaforgood #yogaforwellness #yogaforwellbeing #yoganyc #queensyoga #nycyoga

There are many reasons to practice yoga. One of them is to develop mental and emotional fortitude. Meditation techniques improve concentration and sharpen our mental faculties. But asana and pranayama are mindful activities too. These different yogic practices give you the tools to observe what you are doing at the present moment. Eventually, we see how our own practice changes day to day, hour to hour, moment to moment. Everything is temporary, change is inevitable. ... As we move through the ebb and flow of our lives, and experience wild emotional swings, we learn to become comfortable with the uncomfortable. On the flip side, we also learn not to linger too long on our successes either. This is finding steadiness and balance in the pose, not getting pulled too far in one direction or the other. This is about being the calm at the center of the storm. This is resilience. #mylivingyoga #yogapractice #yogalife #stressrelief #emotionalhealth #mentalhealth #yogabenefits #wellness #healthyliving

There are many reasons to practice yoga. One of them is to feel strong and healthy. Yoga poses or asanas stretch and workout our muscles and joints, so that our bodies become stronger, more flexible and mobile. They also improve range of motion, sense of balance, and awareness of how different parts of the body move and work together. Backbends are great for strengthening back muscles. Twists stimulate digestion. Shoulders stands and bridge poses target the lymphatic syst...em. Pranayama improves lung capacity and the respiratory system. A sedentary lifestyle eventually leads to weakened bodies that are susceptible to illness and disease. When we are sick and unwell, it’s difficult to focus on anything else but trying to nurse ourselves back to health. For centuries, yogis have understood the importance of good physical health. If our bodies are strong and healthy, then we will also have the time and the energy to improve other aspects of our lives. #tuesdaythoughts #yogaforhealth #yogaforstrength #yogaforflexibility #fitspo #fitness #wellness #health #healthybody #yogastrong #healthylifestyle #yogalife #yogalove #yogaforeverybody #yogabody #yogafitness #getmoving #motivation #mylivingyoga

This is not a normal holiday season. Many are dealing with grief and loss, others with isolation from loves ones. If you find it hard to get into the holiday spirit, know that those feelings are perfectly normal, and as with everything else in life, will eventually come to pass. Until then, here are some things you can do so you aren’t overwhelmed by feelings of loneliness. First, focus on yourself. Do some self-care or indulge in things that bring you joy (how about ...a yoga class on Christmas?). Your holiday experience will be special on its own right, and you don’t have to compare it to others’. Do some karma yoga be of service to those who are less fortunate. Volunteer at an animal shelter, deliver meals to the sick and elderly, or buy toys for homeless children, without any expectation of any reward in return. Selfless acts bring true joy and happiness. Forge new holiday traditions go on a hike or a weekend getaway to a place that is meaningful to you. Now is a great time to try a new activity, learn a new skill or master a new yoga pose!
