Greetings from your friendly (if currently non-essential) Mystery Spot proprietress Laura Levine, with a post from @lauralevinepix, a page of my work going back to my early 20s, when I was a photographer deeply immersed in the downtown NYC music/art/culture scene of the 80s. . Your weekend ponder: Can social distancing be an art? In the early 1980s, an endless parade of fascinating people passed through my Chinatown apartment in order to have their portraits taken. Madonna, ...R.E.M., Kathy Acker, Lydia Lunch, Bad Brains, Mark E. Smith, Joan Jett, Afrika Bambaataa, The Misfits... and in 1983, performance artists Tehching Hsieh and Linda Montano, who arrived tied together with an eight-foot piece of rope and remained tied together for a year. Always in the same room together, never touching each other. . The piece was called Art/Life: One Year Performance 1983 - 1984 (Rope Piece). I’ll let them explain: We will stay together for one year and never be alone. We will be in the same room at the same time, when we are inside.
