What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #60 Stop rewarding aggression over and over we are slowly killing our dogs with the wrong information, one of th...e big ones (I heard it again today) Dog is resource guarding its food, trainer suggests to offer the dog a higher profile item so the dog will then focus on the higher value items. If anyone understands Positive Reinforcement training (we do a ton of it, that is how we teach dogs to do new behaviors), what you are doing is adding something so the dog does more of that thing. What you are doing is training a growling dog, training a biting dog, training and reinforcing a death sentence behavior. Yes dogs are killed in shelters for resource guarding, dogs are surrendered into shelters for guarding behavior. Folks, please understand that rewarding your dog with something does not stop the unwanted behavior, it trains the dog to do more of it, that is the whole concept behind reward based training. So why would you reward your growling dog? The advice comes from folks who will tell you to NEVER say NO to your dog, to NEVER correct your dog, to actually NEVER say NO to your dog. The problem is people are getting hurt, dogs are dying and it just does not work.

Great science, some wrong conclusions. This article, Comparison of anamnestic responses to rabies vaccination in dogs and cats with current and out-of-date vac...cination status states: Assuming that neutralizing antibody titer is a measure of protection, then a rabies neutralizing antibody titer of 5.5 IU/ml should afford better protection than a titer of 0.5 IU/ml. STOP right there! This is deceptive and the sand that this whole farce of rabies over vaccination is built on! Every time a pet who is already vaccinated and protected gets exposed to a potentially rabid animal the authorities want to booster them again, and again, and again. This does not enhance immunity nor give further protection, it just makes them sick. Read reference #7 Practical significance of rabies antibodies in cats and dogs. This study proved measuring circulating antibodies correlates with immunity, and any measurable titer equals protection by challenge! It was this study that prompted countries to require rabies titers in pets as part of their regulations for import. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/1472723/ The TRUTH - a blood titer of 0.1 IU/ml, the lowest measure of circulating antibodies, indicates protection - period, end of story! It’s not an assumption that circulating antibodies, a titer, indicates protection it’s truth. Secondly pushing the antibodies higher with mandated repeated rabies booster shots does not afford better protection but in fact sickens and kills pets by over vaccinating them with no medical benefit! In this study the authors point out the veterinary industries use of the term out-of-date (OOD). This is a deceptive term used for those pets who are actually protected and have already achieved immunity to rabies with a titer equal to or greater then 0.1 IU/ml. This arbitrary categorization gives the impression that the pets are not protected when in fact they have immunity and could not contract rabies! Any pet that has circulating antibodies, from previous rabies vaccination, has active immunity. Their immune system would neutralize any rabies virus they were exposed to. One rabies vaccine can protect for life! I must give the authors credit for one very important conclusion they made: we believe that post exposure management should be the same for dogs and cats with current versus out-of-date vaccination status regardless of the severity of exposure. Many Pets previously vaccinated for rabies but labeled as out-of-date had historically been viewed as having no protection and euthanized. The authors conclusion should put an end to this horrendous abuse of power. This study also reiterated what many already know, rabies vaccines labeled for three years and rabies vaccines labeled for one year are both the same, more deception. The study states: A cutoff of 3 years since the last vaccination was used regardless of whether the last vaccine administered had been licensed for a 1-year or 3-year duration, because the antigenic mass, carrier, adjuvant, and other characteristics of 1-year and 3-year vaccines from 2 companies were reportedly identical. I am calling for all scientists, veterinarians and legislators to stand with us- a growing number of educated pet owners, who know the truth and demand change. We must Amend the Corrupt Rabies law to reflect science and honor the Titer as the only correlate with immunity. Stop mandating repeated rabies boosters that have no medical benefit when the pet has already achieved immunity! Protect the pets! Doc https://avmajournals.avma.org/d/pdf/10.2460/javma.246.2.205

THERE AREN'T MANY THINGS SCARIER than witnessing your dog ingesting a foreign object, be it a sock, toy or otherwise. Just the other day, a friend's dog ended u...p in a surgery, because she didn't know this information soon enough. He is ok but it was an unnecessary trauma for everyone. Here's how to help your dog if he or she ever decided to eat a mango pit, your golfballs, a leather strap from your shoe or anything that is not food. See more

Check this out! A new video has been produced by Mars, now the biggest owner of veterinary institutions on the earth by a considerable degree (over 2500 vet hos...pitals incorporating tens of thousands of vets), to teach their vets about the nutritional requirements of cats and dogs. A great dissection follows by the wonderful Susan Thixton (next on my target list for speaking in Ireland, I'm a BIG fan). http://truthaboutpetfood.com/what-royal-canin-reps-are-sel/ It's hard to pick one but a stand-out line by Mars for me is: "We've all seen examples of pet foods advertising the benefits of "real meat" which implies that chicken meal is inferior to whole chicken. But chicken meal is simply chicken with water removed making it a more concentrated source of nutrients for your pet". Guys, meat meal is made in a rendering plant. The process is this: a rendering plant *somewhere* accepts meat not fit for human consumption. This is dead, diseased, dying, disabled animals, in other words meat in various states of decay. They also accept leftovers from the supermarket trade, road kill, slaughterhouse waste, used oil and often pets, as studies repeatedly show. This tasty mix is all stewed up together under high temperature and pressure, like making stock on a large scale. The fat floats to the top and is scraped off to make your soap etc. The protein portion sinks to the bottom as a grey goo. This is removed, dried again with high temperature and arrives to the pet food factory in drums as a fine grey powder. If we ignore the fact that pet food companies are not rewarded financially or otherwise for using good quality meat meal in their mixes, whatever that might be but let's assume European and not say Asian (imports of Chinese meat meal are rocketing, somewhat unbelievably, since 2007, the year contaminated chinese pet food ingredients killed thousands of dogs in the melamine scandal), from a nutritional viewpoint, meat meal is known the world over as an extremely poor food source. Cramer et al. (2007), via an ACTUAL study (as opposed to the beautiful but typically shallow drivel from cereal-based pet food producers with vague reference to "science") compared the protein quality of raw and rendered byproduct meals for chickens. They found that whatever protein was left after the harsh treatments were poorly absorbed by the animal. Cramer, K.R., Greenwood, M.W., Moritz, J.S., Beyer, R.S. and Parsons, C.M. (2007). Protein quality of various raw and rendered byproduct meals commonly incorporated into companion animal diets. Journal of Animal Science https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17609474 As usual, the makers of disgustingly poor food products are saying, without reference, that everything everyone is saying is completely wrong but they will never use actual science to back it up, just beautiful futuristic-looking videos with vague references to science (conducted by them on dry fed dogs). The only science used by cereal-based pet food producers is the science of marketing and in that field they are the total experts.
